Day 9 of my hike. I drove down to Dundas Valley Conservation Area to start my hike. The Conservation Area has parking but it costs $10 to park there. After getting my backpack together and stretching I started my hike.
It was hot at 27 Degrees Celsius which was slightly cooler from last week but humidity was higher. I walked along the roadway to get out of the parking lot and turned left on Governors and than right onto the Bruce Trail. The first 4km of the hike is through a forested area with a lot of plants growing across the trail. Unfortunately for me this is height of caterpillar season. I kept running into them as I walked along the trail. I was covered with caterpillars after a while. I spent time removing them from my clothes and hair. Mosquitoes were out in force as well and I was getting bit fairly aggressively. I sprayed another layer of bug spray and it cut back on the bites. After exiting the Dundas Valley Conservation Area I walked past the Dundas Golf and Curling club and the golfers stared at me as I walked along the road next to the Golf
Club building.
The trail than goes through the Town of Dundas. I walked through the town and it was a pleasant walk until you reach the uphill portion. It is a fairly steep incline and it was slow going but when you cross the bridge near the top it is a great view from the top of the Escarpment. Pictures are attached in this blog. Than you walk through downhill and uphill portions in another forested area until you climb another set of stairs and exit near the town of Flamborough.
The next part of the hike is through a jogging trail and I said hello to many hikers along the way. The next few KM is a pleasant hike through a wide well maintained trail. I made excellent time on this part of the trail because of the easy terrain. I stopped for lunch at the Rock Chapel trail parking lot. The next part of the Bruce Trail is difficult as the trail is narrow and the elevation keeps changing. I was sweating heavily from the humidity at this point and I stopped near a pond next to Adventec Manufacturing plant. I was glad I had brought
lots of water on this trip so I kept myself hydrated. I exited the trail area at Hwy 6 and went through a tunnel to get across the highway. The last 2 KM I was starting to get tired even though the distance wasn't that great. I finally exited the trail and reached my day end at Snake Rd. I marked a spot for next week for the continuation of my hike. There is a spot along the road where you can park your car. I than walked another 3km to get my bus stop. After 3 or 4 wrong buses along the way I finally got back to the Dundas Valley Conservation Area.
So today's hike I will rate Moderate to Difficult because of all the elevation changes. I am now about 1/6 of my way through the Bruce Trail hike. Total hike time 4 Hours and 17.1KM.
