On Saturday I went for a walk with another new buddy, Denise. We took a cab to the start of the Sylvia Grinnell Park trail and then proceeded to walk and talk and take pictures. Michael works on Saturday's so I was happy to have somebody to get outside with on another sunny warm day. The temperature was about 14 or 15 degrees C. The ice had not completely left the river and saw some people were on the ice along the shore fishing. The tide does come up to the mouth of the river and helps clear some of it. When the sun shone on the ice it was a beautiful icy blue colour that only sunshine could give it. Denise and I found many holes where lemmings and birds had been nesting among the ... read more

It was wonderful to finally land on the Iqaluit airstrip. Michael, along with are old friends, Don and Karen Tattrie as well as a couple of his co-workers from Arviat, Jason and Alison all met me at the airport. Wow you would think I was important or something, LOL! They all helped with my bags and then Michael and I were dropped off at the Capital Suites were we would be living until we found an apartment. Michael and I caught up on news from each other and before we knew it, it was time to go over to another friend of ours, Don Hutton's for dinner. Now Don H. is an extraordinary cook and we have sat at his table a number of times over the past two years when we were all living in ... read more

Well I am finally on my last leg of the journey to Iqaluit. I didn't get much sleep last night. I think it was because of the 3 hour time change. I will have plenty of time to catch up on my sleep once I get there. The flight was pretty uneventful and the meal was scrumptious. I am wondering if there will be a lot of snow. Looking out of the window as we fly farther and farther north makes me think that there will be a lot of snow when we land. I am sitting next to a gal, May, who is a research scientist from Trent University and she is going to be setting up a research station just north of Iqaluit. I ask her a lot of questions and she is very ... read more

Baffin It’s a common fact among travellers to realize fully what they got themselves into only when checking in for the outbound flight. I was no exception and few minutes after the counter glowed a nice 82 pounds for my backpack it dawned upon me the suspect that trouble might be at hand. I took some minutes not because I was slow in catching up with the true meaning of it, but because I was at the beginning distressed that 82 pounds did not make a nice round metric 40 kg figure. Then, in brief succession, I noticed the camera and a bag still around my neck, thus rounding numbers up nicely, and realized it was my body in charge of ferrying that huge mass across Baffin Island, where there should be indeed, or might not ... read more
