The City of Halifax (est. 1841) was the capital of the province of Nova Scotia and shire town of Halifax County, and was the largest city in Atlantic Canada until it was amalgamated into Halifax Regional Municipality in 1996.... read more

There’s something magical about going on a road trip in Canada; with the rhythm of the road, the variable weather conditions, and the constantly changing scenery providing endless entertainment. We rode the Greyhound back from the United States to Quebec after a wonderful New Year’s celebration, and grabbed a hire car to spend close to a week exploring the Maritime Provinces situated on the east coast of Canada. We clocked up some serious kilometres on the highway, and it was a memorable trip with the best possible travel companion. Border crossings are such a hassle nowadays, constant reader, and we spent the first day in Quebec Province skirting around the State of Maine before heading down the highway into New Brunswick. I think it’s fair to say we pretty much winged our road trip; with no ... read more

In which I enter the Bible Belt, catch The Hini, and learn a valuable lesson. The farm I arrive at is much larger than any of the previous ones I have visited, consisting of 60+ goats, 600 chickens, and a few cows and some turkeys. But it is the family - the farmer, farmer's wife, daughter, son and his wife - that immediately grab my attention, or more accurately their strong religious views. From the large "Jesus IS The Answer' sticker on the fridge, to the 'Highway Hymns' songbook on the piano, to the numerous 'Bless Our Home' wall hangings and related paraphernalia, it is clear I have unwittingly blundered into a Bible Belt. Add to this the various 'Vote Conservative' stickers also adorning the fridge door, and the cd of "The Gloryland Girls: We Pledge ... read more

We got on the road at a good time and headed for Halifax. When we arrive we picked up Megan from her college and she took us on the grand tour of Halifax! We went to the harbour and then sat in a coffee shop before heading to Megan's brothers place where we had dinner. Megan has learn't to cook and made muscles, we couldn't believe that she could do that as the last cooking experience that i had with Megan almost ended up with a house fire!... read more

We dropped off Megan at school and headed around the city again. It was very different to what we had pictured. Halifax is a pretty industrial place with oil refineries and power stations lining the waterfront. In the evening we headed out for chicken wings and drinks with some old Hilltop people and Megan's brother, good times.... read more

Halifax Nova Scotia Wednesday September 9th. It is 3:30PM and we just sailed into the Halifax harbour. It’s a little weird to be in a big city again. We have been living like trailer park gypsies for the past 3 months and find it a little overwhelming (and exciting) to be in the “Big Town” again. We entered Halifax without problem and docked at the ONLY marina that could accommodate the size of our vessel. When we arrived at the ROYAL Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, we did so in the “Captain Ron” way of doing things, blowing puffs of exhaust smoke and water all over the bright white shoes of the dockhands that received us. Sorry guys.... Little faux pas... Despite this, we were very comfortable enjoying “Mr. Joyce’s” (X Tim Horton’s owner) dock space while ... read more

We were informed tonight that we are on a “ship,” not a boat and a “voyage,” not a cruise. So all of you will refer to my educational voyage as such from here on out, even though I fully expect it to have many similarities to a party boat/cruise. I am actually here, sitting on my bed, in my room, gently rocking back and forth in the waves (luckily no sea sickness yet) and listening to the sweet rumble of the engines (they are just below my room). Mimi, I am pretty sure you would request a room change! I am going to look at it as part of this experience and I would laugh if by the end I need the sound to sleep to. I am in a room with three other girls; it ... read more

So here we are, the night before I leave on my four month journey around the world. Wow, I can't believe it is finally here. Packing went fairly smoothly (not too much fighting with Mom), although some of my small extras had to go to Jeremy's house to be packed by him. More than anything I am interested to see if my bags are under the 50 pound weight limit, normally one of my two when I travel is over by a few pounds. Also, don't forget how much I am going to have to pay to check my luggage; when I just came home from Cape Cod, I paid $40 for my two bags on Delta, so we will see how much it will be on Continental. I feel a little less prepared for this ... read more
