It's been said by someone somewhere that one can never really come home again. I'm glad that's not true. Home is, well, home. After 10 hours on 2 planes, and an 8 hour drive north, we found ourselves back in the parking lot at the school, students and parents reunited. I am not sure who was more relieved: them or me! It was one of those moments where one just cannot decide if the past 10 days were a vivid group dream or if they really did happen. Over the 12 days we were gone explored 4 distinct regions of the UK. We definitely didn't have enough time. We left so much undiscovered, and had to move on all too quickly. We met new people and made some friends. We argued, and laughed, debated, questioned authority, ... read more

Well, hello. It's been awhile. For some of you five years, to be exact, since my epic Chinese soujourn. I am off on another adventure. If you received a message via email that there is a new post, then, TA-DA! This is it. If you would like me to unsubscribe you from the blog, drop me a line at spiritednortherngirl@gmail.com. I will honour your wish, but I warn you, you will be missing out on green Irish grass and English castles, Scottish kilts, ceilidhs, leprechauns, a World Heritage Site, The Giants' Causeway, The London theatre scene, etcetera. I am hoping we laugh every day, sample interesting new foods, see and smell new sights that all of us remember for some time to come. I really do hope you'll come along with us via the blog. ? ... read more

Still here in Thompson preparing for my trip physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially. I don't know what to expect. They say 'be flexible'. I think that is definitely one of my strengths. I'm not sure what to expect from a country with a difficult history. I've done some reading on the subject, and I can actually understand an attitude that says 'Just because you have a lot of support, you can't tell us what we can or can't do'. I don't know how 'developed' it is. Is it like Guatemala where the really poor people had low levels of education and lived in shacks with aluminum roofs and dirt floors? Or would it be similar to Korea with more modernization but some very conservative traditions and values (like it was OK for men to hold hands ... read more

Geo: 55.7443, -97.8507The only stop on our train journey that allowed for any visit much longer than a train-side cigarette break and leg stretch was Thompson, Manitoba. While chatting with some more experienced train riders of the north, DH had discovered that Thompson was home to a solitary and proud Tim Horton's Coffee Shop, and she-who-must-be-obeyed decided that we would be seeking out this beacon of coffee ecstasy even if it were to jeopardize our timely return to the train. My reasons for seeing Thompson were far less substantial of course, but I wanted to wander the town that I had heard so much about when I was toiling as an underground miner many years ago in the nearby metropolis of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Thompson was/is a nickel mining town and, among the hardrock types, was ... read more

Home again, home again, jiggity, jig. That is how the saying goes, anyway. After a smooth and uneventful flight from Beijing to Vancouver, and then again from Vancouver to Winnipeg, I finally landed on time at the ritzy new Winnipeg terminal after having been "up" for about 25 hours. OMG. I crashed after 3 am local time and slept for 7 hours. I thought maybe it would be easier to reorient myself coming back this way, but alas, I was mistaken. I found it worse returning home than arriving in China. After a long bus ride home, where I did sleep some, I made it back to Thompson and full on winter. I have made it through a vicious jet lag and managed to catch an awful cold and cough, er actually, we are calling it ... read more

We are still in Thompson. Leaving for Las Vegas on March 6th for a ReMax convention. Bea and I will be doing some travels away from Vegas while there including the Hoover Dam and part of the canyon. The rest of our plans for the spring are a week in Breezy Point, Minnesota in May and a trip to Iceland to experience the longest daylight hours over the 21st of June. Keep watch.... read more
