Me at the top of Whistler Mountain, BC “The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
I left Tofino British Columbia by 8am on Thursday April 9th, caught the Ferry and arrived in Whistler around 5pm. I made several stops along the way. Someone at the Tofino hostel advised me to stop at Shannon Falls and it was great advice … it was very pretty. When I arrived in Whistler it was pouring down rain. Needless to say, I spent the evening in but eventually the rain had cleared and so had the clouds. At 11:00pm, when I was about to head to bed, I noticed it; the big bright full moon over Whistler mountain. It was so breathtaking. I grabbed my camera and while in my PJs, I wandered outside to take pictures. I experimented with keeping the shutter open and was eventually able to make a picture of the moon in the shape of a heart … that was so much fun.
The next day was completely sunny

Shannon Falls, outside Whistler and warm. In fact, I was up at 6:30am to watch the sun rise over the mountains. I headed into Whistler after the sunrise and rode up the gondola. Just this past December they opened a new gondola called “peak to peak” which actually takes you from the top of Whistler to the top of Blackcomb Mountain. The ride is about 11 minutes and you can ride it back and forth as often as you like. I stopped at the top of Blackcomb, grabbed a hot chocolate and enjoyed relaxing with the views for awhile. I eventually came down the mountain, enjoyed a lunch on a patio in the village and then headed back to the hostel. The afternoon and evening were spent doing my ESL pre-course assignment. It seems a shame to be doing work out here, but I couldn’t ask for a better view when I looked up from the books.
Just when I thought the trip was over and I was heading east to be with the family for Easter, my old friend Prem contacted me to say he was in town (Vancouver). He was another old army cadet friend I hadn’t seen in 25 years.

Me at Shannon Falls It was an easy decision; I headed back to Vancouver to meet up with him for breakfast at the Blue Parrot on Granville Island with a great view of the harbour. We spent the next couple hours catching up and getting to know each other again. The years melted away.
Now, it is time to hit the road again to be with family for Easter in Sicamous and then off to Calgary to take my ESL course. What an awesome trip … meeting new friends and reuniting with old friends. How do I feel about it all? Stay tuned … one more blog entry to come.
