We have had two/ three very relaxing days at this Indian Reservation deep in the forests of Quadra Island. We have explored the island from top to bottom and been along some very remote logging trails that literally ended up in the middle of nowhere. Haven't seen any of the Blackfoot Tribe but some of the locals must be close relatives. Blimey there are a lot trees here. Massive ,straight and seeming to go right up to the clouds. By the million! There is more driftwood piled up along the shore than I ever imagined. If I could get an export license I'd make a fortune bringing it over to the UK. The wildlife continues to be all around us.... But no bears in sight. Tomorrow back to Vancouver on the ferry. We are going totem ... read more

Jim witing this... Sitting in lounge at hotel on Quadra Isalnd having spent yesterday retracing our outward route. We saw rain for the first time, luckily when it didn't matter. Scenery again was stunning. This hotel is 'green' and we half expected tree huggers and Eco toilets with no flush! Fortunately that is not the case although there is certainly a natural feel to the place. Plastic carrier bags are banned. Staff here are normal, helpful but not a in Basil Fawlty style. Camera is in full use. Directly outsde our room we had deer and a bald eagle ( no comments needed). One of these days I will have right camera with right settings at the right time. But not yet! I really should be getting some great shots. Still don't be too concerned I ... read more

Day 53 - July 14th – Channel Rock We pulled out of the ferry and immediately rolled down the window in order to continue the streak of unfiltered ocean air we were breathing. I’m so far from home but the inner peace overpowers most of the homesickness. Reliving the journey required to get to Cortes Island is enough to remind me I’m in the middle of nowhere, but this nowhere is unlike others. Not many people live here. Not many people know it exists. But it’s here, and it’s extraordinary. From the road leaving the ferry we take a right onto a dirt road, then shortly after come across a small parking lot surrounded by forest. We hurry to load up our necessities as there’s a 15 minute hike ahead and we haven’t eaten lunch. The ... read more

After a couple of grey, wet & windy days the sun has returned again today. Now in Campbell River (about 2/3rds of the way up Vancouver Island). When we left Nanaimo last Friday we headed west again, towards the Pacific Coast. Quick stops for sightseeing on the way at Little Qualicum Falls (great place) and Cathedral Grove (lots of big trees - it was about as exciting as it sounds) before arriving in Port Alberni. Port Alberni is a sea port, but is about 30 miles inland as it sits at the head of a long narrow inlet. It's a nice, if somewhat functional, little town: and yet another one with a great big industrial plant in the middle of it. But the snow-capped mountains surrounding the town made up for its shortcomings. Saturday, we headed ... read more

Nous bifurquons ... read more

We arrived to a pleasant and sunny Vancouver evening and wandered down from our very basic, but conveniently located hostel to the waterfront in Gastown for something to eat and drink. With its seemingly friendly vibe, laid back pace of life and the surrounding water and mountains, Vancouver reminds us of a larger version of Queenstown, New Zealand. We didn’t do much on the first day other than prepare ourselves for the Orca Camp trip, and during the afternoon of our second full day we were on the ferry to Vancouver Island where the Camp would be. When we got outside the Nanaimo ferry terminal, we’d just missed the shuttle bus we needed to get in order to make the 150km journey up the coast to Campbell River, where our camping trip would start. Although a ... read more
