Elk are the second largest members of the deer family.

A male elk sheds his antlers in March and begins growing them again in May. When it comes to antlers, bigger is better and the larger the spread, the more females the male will gather for his harem.

Elk once roamed all across the United States and Canada. During this time it is believed the elk population was close to 10 million. By 1900 barely 100,000 elk remained.
