Mid December was marked by death, birth, feasting and warm rum and cider. A lot for one weekend, huh? We went to see the bald headed eagles feasting on salmon at Brackendale with Tim and Barb, which was pretty amazing. The bald headed eagle is apparently the only eagle unique to North America. They arrive on mass at the river running through Brackendale (just near Squamish) at this time of year (December/January) to feast on the dying, rotting salmon. The eagles were magnificent and demanding of your respect. They look like judges, in their white caps, perched up above society, casting judgments. You can’t help feeling a little nervous when they peer down on you. It is a fascinating and beautiful but also depressing and macabre scene. The salmon have swam all the way from the ... read more

We have been spending out last few days in Canada doing a few touristy things, spending time with friends (the Millards have really put themselves out for us) and revisiting the snowboarding slopes (not me you understand - my back is still poorly you see!). Also what a relief to warm up to a pleasant minus 2! Bring on the sun in Oz I say! On Saturday we had a relaxing day in Squamish. We had a walk along the river again and saw more eagles and their victims (several dead and decaying fish). The kids enjoyed making dams and getting their feet wet and also the thin sheet ice that we found proved too much to resist and so several sheets found their way onto several heads! We also visited the Capilano Suspension bridge - ... read more

Hi Bloggers! Having a great time in Canada. I've been snow boarding for two days. It was absolutely brill but we had to wake up at 6 o clock - that wasnt so good. When we got to the place where we were snowboarding there were other children there and i moved up a level the second day. If I go again I will be in level two. One of Fiendish's friends is on level 4 and did a big run. On the second day I went down a ramp. It was full of people that I had to dodge. My shoulder ached at the end because I fell on it. Freaky's back hurt and flirtys feet hurt! The best bit was that it was easy to learn and I was one of the best in ... read more

Quite Literally in fact as we took a 17 hour train journey from Jasper to Vancouver last Saturday, arriving on Sunday. Contrary to other entries it wasnt that bad - we slept fitfully, and the girls won prizes at Bingo! Also before leaving in a desperate attempt to gain any sighting of wildlife we actually spotted Elk on the train tracks! On the train there is a viewing car which gives a good view of the (in our case) snow covered mountains and forests albeit in the dwindling light - it passed the time and we are getting really blase about the snow and scenery now! When we arrived in Vancouver we were met by long lost friends who had made the effort to arrive at the station by 7.30am - pretty impressive! After a stonking ... read more

This week Natalie flew to N. Carolina to drive back to WA with a friend. In the meantime I've been tying up loose ends and enjoying Bellingham just a bit longer. I also managed to squeeze in a climbing trip to squamish. Which is a beautiful little village about an hour north of Vancouver. The rock there is unbelievable and I had a friend to show me some of his favorite routes. John (wild at heart) W. was amazing to watch climb and to learn from. I can't believe in all the years I've lived in Bellingham I never visited Squamish. I'll be back there for sure, however, I don't think it will ever be the same development is going crazy there because of the upcoming Olympics in the area. I recommend getting there now while ... read more

Jono and I decided this weekend to get off the beaten track and climb some where quieter that we had not been before. Last time we tried this, we ended up sleeping in a gravel pit and climbing underneath someone who was throwing chunks of cliff on top of us. This time we opted for a secluded forested valley with towering granite gorges on both sides. Dark, damp, mossy, eerie. Perfect. After about a 30 to 40 minute walk we found ourselves in the valley of Shaddai looking up at a 10.C (Aust. 19) finger crack. We both had a go on it and deemed it worthy of setting up a top rope so we could have a few goes on it. (I know, non-climbers think we are strange enough to want to do things like ... read more

Day 4 - Wednesday, August 15, 2007 Heli-Hiking in the Tantalus Range: OK, every day of this trip was a great adventure, but if I had to pick my favorite day (reference to the One Game we played on Day 2 - "what is the one..."), this day had to be my favorite because I had never done anything like this before and everything was perfect...the weather conditions, the itinerary, and most importantly, the company. For me, part of being outside is taking in the environment around you and fully appreciating the landscape, smells, and sounds. But it becomes more significant when you're able to share that experience with the right group of people. This day was an epic one for me and so I would like to shout out a special 'thank you' to my ... read more

Day 3 - Tuesday, August 14, 2007 Hike up to the Second Peak of The Chief: Up until today, my body was feeling great and all those hours in the gym (thanks Joel, Joe, Linda, and Jean-Paul), all the miles on my bike and on trails, and all my ice time in the rink was paying off. Ha...I spoke too soon. The Stawamus Chief, or The Chief as it's referred to by the locals, is the landmark typically associated with Squamish. The Chief is a destination for rock climbing enthusiasts and rates up there with Yosemite. Today, we weren't going to climb the rock, but rather take it on via the backside and hike up to the second peak. Piece of cake...not! Total trip was only going to be 9k but the elevation gain was 2007'. ... read more

Day 2 - Monday, August 13, 2007 Hike to Elfin Lakes up in Garibaldi Provincial Park: Today, our adventure was a 22k round-trip hike to Elfin Lakes (with a 2500 ft elevation gain) which took us 4.5 hours to complete. The trailhead is located in the Garibaldi Provincial Park on the east side of Squamish. What a day...the sun came out to play and it stayed with us the rest of the week - woohoo! We were treated to the spectacular scenery that surrounds Squamish...the Tantalus Range to the west, Vancouver Island further west, and the Coast Mountain Range to the east and north of us. The hike to Elfin Lakes was beautiful and we were all giddy from the fresh mountain air. It was definitely a place I could've spent more time exploring but that ... read more

Day 1 - Sunday, August 12, 2007 Rock climbing on The Smoke Bluffs: I woke up to your typical Pacific Northwest weather - overcast and looking like there was a chance of rain. I was ecstatic! Where exactly is Squamish, BC you ask? Well, it's about one hour north of Vancouver on the Sea to Sky highway heading to Whistler. And, why did I pick this place to celebrate my recent decision to leave my desk job in San Francisco and move back to the northwest to pursue a new career in outdoor recreation? Well, read on... These adventures actually took root almost two years ago at the Bearfoot Bistro in Whistler while noshin' on some oysters and champagne after a day on the slopes. That chance meeting led me to an incredible week-long kayak trip ... read more
