27th July ’12 Seattle to Hope, British Columbia, Canada I woke to a dull throbbing in my feet which was an improvement on yesterday and we made it with our rucksacks down to the bus stop. The car rental place was about 8 miles out of the city where we were collecting our ride (God I am turning American – we have been away too long!) for the next couple of weeks. Hiring a car in the states is much cheaper than hiring one in Canada. We were going to cross the border at Sumas this time but Howard announced that first we were going to do a short side trip. Soon we were bombing along winding country lanes, with high mist covered mountains. We eventually reached the Mount Baker area and were even able to ... read more

Is that really a solar panel behind your bike? I could not have imagined a better icebreaker than a bike trailer with a solar panel. In fact, even if it weren't connected to anything at all, it would still be worth dragging the darned thing up the Fraser Valley as I have been doing for the past 5 days. The answer is of course, yes, that is indeed a solar panel that I've hauled the 440-odd kilometres to Hope, British Columbia. Starting in Victoria, the panel faithfully followed me up the Saanich Peninsula, over the ferry and past the farms of Salt Spring Island, then back across to Vancouver Island, bounced its way along logging roads to Nanaimo, sat patiently on the ferry to mainland Vancouver, rocketed around Stanley Park, and weaved its way through the ... read more

I can't believe my time at Hell's Gate is coming to an end, only a few more days till I leave. This summer has gone so fast. I've met so many nice people from different parts of the world here, and I've had a blast, I hope my winter turns out to be the same. I attended my first ice hockey game the other night in Chilliwack. Gina and Ron bought us tickets and drive us in with them. Our seats were directly behind the box where all the players sit when their not playing, they were awesom seats. Chilliwack Bruins were playing a team from Washington state. There was so much excitment in the arena, Heidi and I made it onto the big screen twice, once dancing to the chicken dance and the other trying ... read more

Well, it feels like things are coming to an end already. Danny, Jenn, Nate, Chris and Kim have all left to go back to school, except for Chris, he went home to England for another job. So now there's only Andy, Heidi, Elbie and I left at res. We had a farewell party for Nate and Kim, which they both got pretty drunk and had nice hangovers for their flights home. Alot of people from work came too, Diane, Gina and Ron, Kathy and Ken, Ashley and Kelsey, then everyone from res. The fire ban was lifted the day of the party, so we were able to have one last fire for them. It was a pretty cold out that night, so I put on this huge spare jacket on that was in our house, it ... read more

I've been pretty slack with my next blog, I know, but not alot has been happening. I've a little bit converted to country music. Kathy and Ken took Heidi, Elbie, Jen and I to a concert playing Dustin Bentall. He was amazing, I think it was classed as new country. We had a great time though, we our photo taken with him and Kendall Carson, another country artist who was playing violin for him. They were playing in a packing house at Spencer's Bridge, it was small, but everyone had an awesome view. Brian and Tara got married. What a beautiful day they had for the wedding. While they were getting ready and married, little did Brian know that instead of four tour buses coming, we actually had six and constantly had people coing in right ... read more

Well we made it to Idaho (and there was no sign of Keanu Reeves, before any of you ask...) We stayed in the town of Bonners Ferry (where, we discovered, they sell surprisingly cheap liquor!). We crossed back into Canada last Wednesday, and headed up via Creston to Kootenay Lake. We spent a very pleasant couple of hours at Lockhart Beach, lying in the blazing sunshine, before heading north again to Kootenay Bay to catch the car ferry across to Balfour. The 45 minute crossing apparently makes this journey the longest FREE car ferry journey in the world (for those of you who are interested in that sort of thing). I’m sure that you can imaging Craig’s conflict: on the one hand it was FREE, but on the other it involved getting on a boat and ... read more

Finally on the road. And gosh, its already been eventful. The last two nights before we were leaving I didn't get so much sleep. I almost 2 weeks in Vancouver, but I decided to leave everything to the last minute organize, so the last two days were very crammed. Our riding group was supposed to be made up of five people, one of which joins us a little late on the 20th in Banff. On the 7th 4 of us were to set off. 7th July Charli, Sam and I were couch surfing in Coquitlam, which is a suburb of Vancouver and lays a little to the west, so we decided just to set off from there. Anne (1/5th of the group) was staying in Vancouver. We arrange to meet at 8.15 at coquitlam bus station. ... read more

So, everyone must be thinking that I'm a huge drinker over here in Canada. The funny thing is, you couldn't any further wrong. It's just that whenever there is something to write about, it seems to be an event that involves drinking. I'm sure you'd all get bored if I wrote about my nights that we all just sit around watching TV or movies or about going grocery shopping. The truth is, I really only have a drink maybe once a week, so no, I'm not an alcoholic, I am on a working holiday and not a drinking holiday as somebody asked me lol. I'm really only saying this cos, my next paragraph involves me drinking again. My days off. I ended up having to work on one of my days off as Brian wasn't there, ... read more

WOW! After three amazing days in Vancouver Julia and I are now comfortably settled into the Quality Inn in Hope, BC. Full from our dinner at a diner called 'HOME'. It was pure comfort food. Julia chowed down on a hot turkey sandwich, a mug of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and the largest homemade 'M&M' cookie I've ever seen. I enjoyed a homemade tomato soup filled with veggies and a hot mug of tea. My spinach salad was not to my liking and as is common in small towns and places that just 'get it'...the waitress did not charge me for my soup/salad combo. She simply said - 'you did not eat it and so I will not charge you for it.' We left Vancouver at about 11 am this morning and took our ... read more

I know, I know, sorry everyone, I've been a bit slack with putting my mext blog up. Ok, well here it is, enjoy. Ok, well this week was off to a great start. A couple of people from last year, Kyle, Brenden and Vote turned up at res, they came for a visit and were staying with Diane and Rob but came out for a drink at res and to meet all the new staff. Of course, Jenn and Kim were the first to introduce themselves and to start flirting with them. It was good to have a few drinks with everyone though, I drank a bottle of Wolf Blass Yellow Label to myself, very nice. It was gone by 9:30pm lol. I was quite happy. We've had two blackouts this week. The first one happened ... read more
