Stettler is a bustling town of 5,700 lying roughly between Calgary and Edmonton in rural Alberta. We spent four nights there with my oldest brother Berny and his wife Dawn, who organized a family get-together with my other three remaining brothers and various nephews, nieces and small fry. We spent an afternoon hiking at Scenic Sands, a resort community, where we came upon a prolific copse of plump, juicy Saskatoon berries. What a find! We gorged ourselves and rubbed our sore tummies afterwards. Coming from a family of five brothers, get-togethers are always boisterous, noisy and lots of fun. I managed to lose almost every beanbag game I played but won one very long game of Tok, our favourite board game, under the shade of a mountain ash. We were fed till we thought we would ... read more

It was hard leaving Little Bobtail Lake despite bring locked in the outhouse for half an hour while Randy and Tim worked to get me out. I was thankful that Tim heard me yelling and that there was a screened window to press my nose against while they fiddled with the jammed lock. A bad experience makes a good story I always say! There was excitement too when Dave made a sharp turn with the boat and I found myself on the floor, wineglass still in hand. Too bad Tim was in the wine's path! Our drive out took us through many areas of the 25,000 hectare fire that ravaged this area in May. The cabin we stayed in came dangerously close to burning, but due to the heroic efforts of over 300 firefighters, not one ... read more

Today we said our goodbyes to the Yates and started the Rockies leg of our trip. I just want to jump right into the mountain scenery but should first report on the morning drive. It took about 2 hours to reach Red Deer without any irregularities. Once in Red Deer we drove around to find the tourist info center and a superstore to fill up on the staples and to our surprise a beautiful bike path lay at the crest of the parking lot. So we hoped on our bikes and toured the length of the Red Deer River. A nice ride but the kids seemed a little fatigued from their Byemoor adventures or misadventures. We soon headed back on the road west and I quickly learned a new lesson about speed bumps and cooking on ... read more
