Shall we go for a drive? Why not! On the drive there the trees were stunning, golden and beautiful. Off to Elbow Falls, it was summer time, the place was packed full of people picnicking and barbequing and what a beautiful place to visit. We had a walk around took a few photos just chilled and enjoyed it. =) We went for another drive to Elbow Falls in the Winter... The turn off for the falls was as far as the road was open, blocked because of the winter snow. It was fantastic, this time there was no one there, we got to see this beautiful place in another light, it was so peaceful and just absolutely stunning.... read more

Our theme was viewing the larches turning colour; our destination was Kananaskis Country. We drove along the Smith-Dorien for a while and parked at the day use area. The weather was glorious, just a little fall briskness to make us appreciated the sunny blue sky. The first part of the trail was through a valley bottom meadow, easy walking with a few golden larches in the distance as enticement. Once into the treed area, the path headed uphill for the rest of the hike. A few twisted and some lone larches gleamed out of the dark green pines; these stood out because the dark trunks and limbs set off the gold needles. As soon as I stopped to take photos, the faster B group disappeared up the trail. Because it seemed there was only one path, ... read more

Our route this morning took us south through Longview to the Sentinel Recreation Area. My choice was the C group because both the leaders of the B group were fast walkers. Good choice because the whole way to our destination of Grass Pass was up. Our leader stopped every few minutes for a breather and for the opportunity to look into the woods. The aspens were beautiful, lit by a warm wash of light that my camera couldn’t capture. The pale, slightly golden trunks reminded me of birch used to make canoes. Scattered near the path were the last of the wildflowers, mainly Paintbrush and a lovely purply-blue flower I can’t identify. A few squirrels dashed about in the trees and underbrush, only one coming out to have a look at us while he chomped down ... read more

This week we had the BBQ to anticipate, thus not needing a lunch in our backpacks. I started the day with my fishcake bunwich breakfast, although another hiker forgot hers at home in the fridge – always a worry of mine. A couple of us shared our snacks with her so she wouldn’t be starving. She did notice lack of energy on our hike. So few people signed up for the B version of the planned walks that the A version was divided into A, slow A, and slower A, plus the C group that walked part way around Lake Kananaskis. I started with the slow A group, but they weren’t tolerating stoppages for photos or breathing. So I let the last person in that group know that I was hanging back for the slower A ... read more

Our trip was supposed to be to Burstall Pass, but the condition report said that there was three feet of water on the trail. So it was announced on the bus that we would go to Ribbon Creek. Outside, it was steadily raining from dark widespread clouds. The C group was dropped off at the Kananaskis Village, which is just a multi-purpose building not far from the hotels. I didn’t feel like spending the day wandering along local paths in the rain, so I took the advice of Wolfgang and Gerdie, sitting in front of me, by joining the B group. Ten minutes later when we arrived at the parking area for Ribbon Creek, the rain had stopped and never came again. I was decked out in my rain pants, fleece, long-sleeved light thermal, rain jacket ... read more

With the advent of July the bus leaves ay 7:30, prompting me to bring breakfast to eat on the bus – salmon cakes in a bun with lettuce spears and a banana. The bus was almost full with 47 participants. Our destination was Kananaskis. Eight of us chose the “C” option, a short walk up to the lake. The other options had 1500 ft in elevation change – too much for me, I think. The initial steep uphill was to the campground (no cars, wilderness permit required for camping). The footing was packed dirt with loose and embedded stones, possibly indicating forestry vehicle access. We all agreed to walk further beside the river into a beautiful valley affording a 360-degree view of mountain peaks, little snow. After not long we encountered a serious stream tumbling across ... read more

When: Oct 2 2011 Where: Highwood pass, Kananaskis country Highlights:Yellow Larch trees What are larch trees? Ganesh heard about this trail that was famous for its fall color. So, once again, grateful for being so close to these mountains, we drove in to Highwood Meadows. Btw, Highwood Pass is the highest pass in Canada that could be reached via a paved road. It is at an elevation of 2206 m(7237 ft). Two trails head from this parking lot. 1. The absolutely incredible Ptarmigan cirque 2. Highwood Meadows Trail - that branches into an unnamed trail. But right at the trailhead, a board greeted us. A board that read that the area was closed as a grizzly bear with cubs were in Ptarmigan cirque basin. We wer... read more

When: May 28th-29th 2011 Where: Kananaskis country Highlights: Bow Valley Provincial Park, Elbow Falls Saturday, May 28th: A major system brought a lot of precipitation to southern AB & much of BC(obviously). The weather cleared yesterday evening & we thought we will make use of the rain to see the swollen rivers. We took the road-not-taken towards Bragg Creek. We ventured further without anything specific in mind. A short stop at the visitor center gave us some ideas. The rockies have received so much precipitation this past week that it made no sense to go up to the mountains. They were all covered in snow or muddy/slushy after the rain. Our first stop was at Allen Bill Pond. This apparently is a major picnic site & a popular fishing spot. S got to bring out her ... read more

Hi everyone, Just updating you on what I got up to today, I did a wonderful hike up Hai Ling peak near Canmore in Kananaskis country I think! It is not in Banff National park but next to it. Again great views and good exercise but I can tell you after skiing on saturday and climbing yesterday my quads were feeling it today. However the group I went with had a moderate pace so it was fine. It was akin to going for a jaunt up Mangerton mountain in Kerry so I was happy out and to be honest my poor quads would not have done much more. As a good friend of mine said to me before when the muscles are burning the day after exercise one has the doms and by god do I ... read more
