Our Skrastins group merrily met in front of the re-instituted bus and started off for Troll Falls. The cool, sun-dappled shade refreshed our minds and bodies. Obeying the sign that clearly pointed out the path to Troll Falls, we found ourselves on a road and heading towards another sign that said “This is not the way to Troll Falls.” Nothing could spoil our good humour as we eventually found the right path. With the recent rains and glacier melt, the Falls crashed down their rock face with almost deafening force, but the spray was welcome on what was becoming a hot day. Eager for more, we took the relatively new path steeply up to the Upper Falls. There the water poured over large step stones, creating a wedding-cake of pulsing white water. The damp days of this summer gently nurtured the wild flowers in the the mountains. Bold colours peeked from mossy woodlands. Multifarious mushrooms soaked up the rich juices of the earth. A few small animals ventured near to us to have their photos taken. On August 2 we chugged up the wide path to a serene Elbow Lake encircled by dark green trees and richer green fields. Beyond the lake the path towards Rae Glacier wandered through bushes bursting with new leaves and long blades of grass that framed the tiny blooms on every side. August 16 brought us onto the damp forest path to Black Prince Lake, a lake that has virtually disappeared since the floods of 2013. Most of the morning we rejoiced at the wide varieties of mushrooms just at the sides of ... read more

Oh! The wild flowers! First we had to struggle along a steep ascent through the woods. After about 45 minutes, the path opened onto the Highland Meadows. Expanses of white, yellow and purple wildflowers carpeted the newly emerged grasses. My eyes swept from the tiny blooms to the towering peaks. Yellow Glacier Lillies grew in a profusion that promised good eating for the bears in a few weeks. Elaine was expert at sighting minuscule blossoms such as the purple Moss Phlox and the red Rose Root. Our walk was slowed to a crawl as we searched for little plants to exclaim about and to photograph. We paused for lunch at the base of the mountains all around the meadows. Now our imaginations soared as we marvelled at the rock so obviously ripped out of the earth ... read more

Immediately, the pale pink dawn initiated perfect views of the mountains. Soon we drove under the strong chinook cloud, watching the light of day slowly illuminating the familiar crags. Suddenly, as we drove south, the brilliant rising sun shone under the clouds onto the fresh snow on the mountain peaks. Nature’s whitest highlights dominated the deep ravines and dark evergreen trees. Walking around the grounds of William Watson Lodge turned my eyes down to the plants poking out of the thin snow-cover. Tiny frozen flowers steadfastly declared their faded glory from summer. Small bushes adorned the winter with their red bark. Harsh marks on brownish-grey tree trunks glowed copper in the sun. Cozy inside the Lodge, I watched gusts of wind scour the snow from the roof, appearing to create a blizzard. Moments later, calm prevailed. ... read more

May 4 Bow Valley The brightness of fresh green delighted our eyes on this first hike in the mountains for the year. Cold waters reflected mountains and the sky, behind a screen of fuzzy pussy willows. Long, straw grasses lay matted over tussocks, hiding tiny shoots of growth. May 11 Troll Falls Troll Falls is our reward at the end of a gentle stroll through the woods. The rushing fall of water hasn't yet melted the icy crusts of snow. Around some corners and up the hill we find ourselves overlooking the recently-opened new Kananaskis Golf Course, surrounded by darkly looking mountain peaks. May 18 Lusk Creek Sculptural trees and stumps transcend the reality of past fire that made a prairie of a forest. Vistas display the beauty of mountains and valleys, playing with our imaginations. ... read more

Towering mountain scenery surrounded the trailhead, encouraging us up the initial incline. Our way began through sun-dappled woods sprinkled with our wild friends - Fireweed, Paintbrush , and a new friend for me, Grass of Parnassus . The view widened as we entered an avalanche area now dominated not by the grey fallen trees but by the vibrant regrowth of pines. The green undergrowth was aggressive enough to narrow the path to footstep width, making me wonder if the path will exist by next year. Short of our destination, the persistence of plants had completely obscured the path to the tarn. We capitulated and ate lunch on deadfall overlooking Marushka Lake. Our shortened walk and quick return was unsat... read more

After days of baking temperatures in Calgary, I welcomed the fresh breezes in Kananaskis as the perfect start to a day of carefree walking with Skrastin's Outdoor Club. Since dawdling over photography was anticipated, I agreed to be the sweep for our subgroup of about seven seekers of mild pleasures. The start of the walk to Fox Lake was stiffly up a discouraging incline, but the rest of the day was an undulating ramble through dappled woodlands. The light smokey haze from forest fires in British Columbia shifted away from us by mid-day, when we sat on driftwood logs gazing at unimpeded views of the green lake. From the gigantic mountain backdrop to the tiny pale-cream paintbrush, my eyes absorbed the unrehearsed beauty of wild nature.... read more

After such an amazing but tiring month of travel, it was good to have a week to get back into a routine again. My stomach was as confused as it has ever been with the food I had eaten over the last month or so and it was good to start trying to eat health and consistently again. It was also just good to relax and unwind but I also had the chance to get out and about as well. I went to the Kings Head pub to watch a cover band that were extremely good, played cricket on a Saturday afternoon with the footy boys and then had an unexpected hiking and camping adventure sprung on me from a teacher who had done an exchange in Renmark in South Australia about 6 years ago. I ... read more

Kananaskis Country I had heard was quite beautiful and had some great hikes but in the last 3 days I saw just why the locals like to keep it 'their little secret'! As it is I fill bad writing about it, but some of the views I have seen in the last few days I still feel I am dreaming. Each of the hikes I participated in were unique in their own way and had different weather conditions as well but nothing beats that feeling of reaching the top of the mountain and receiving the reward of the view of the mountains. RAWSON LAKE & SARRAIL RIDGE On this particular hike I was lucky enough to go with Simon and Brian M who I went with to Crypt. This time we had another Bryan D (a ... read more

ELBOW FALLS I had been advised by my neighbour (while I am over here in Canada) Jana that for a nice little drive and relaxing spot to visit I should check out Elbow Falls, which is only located an 50 minute to an hour drive from Calgary. I finally had a chance to go explore this beautiful little secret a few weeks ago and while it is not really that strenuous for hiking the view itself was very worth while. My drive took my past Bragg Creek, the place of my infamous bike accident and up towards Kananaskis Country where the further I drove I began to see yet another amazing drive appear before my eyes. This will be a drive for another day but the beautiful green trees and the mountains of the Rockies were ... read more
