Middle East » Jordan » South » Wadi Rum April 10th 2007

Well the following day was a border crossing day, as in it took until 5pm for the 3pm ferry to get going, then getting through customs the other side was another hour. We stopped in Aqaba in Jordan, and immediately we could see the difference between Jordan and Turkey. The money was clean, like the city, and the people didn't hassle you. It was great! Our drive to Wadi Rum (the desert where Lawrence of Arabia shot to fame), where we were sleeping for the night. The drive took us up from the border crossing town and we could see 4 countries all at once. Obviously, we were in one, Jordan, but we could also see Elat in Israel, back across to Egypt and also across to Saudi Arabia. The camp we stayed at was ... read more

The flight to Istanbul could have been better. I fell sleep before we even took off from JFK, but then woke up during the actual take-off. About an hour or so later they woke me up for dinner, which I'm glad they did, and from then until breakfast about 6 or 7 hours later, I was trying to sleep and not having the best luck at it. My right leg kept falling asleep and it was driving me nuts. I couldn't quite get comfortable. The flight was half full, and my original seat was 25G, an aisle seat in the 4-seat middle section. The only other guy in the row with me moved to a window seat, so I could have had 4 seats to myself to lay down. At the time though, I thought ... read more

Been a while since last post, and falling behind. Haven't had much net access lately. Currently in a net cafe with no ventilation, surrounded by chainsmoking Syrians... not sure how much longer I can stand it so this may be short :) When last we met we'd arrived in Amman. The following day we headed out to visit the fabulous ruined Roman city of Jorash, the highlight of which was a fabulous semi-circular theatre in excellent condition that seats ~3000 people. It was even possible to view seat numbers carved beneath the seats... funny how some things work so well they remain unchanged after two thousand years. Was amazing to just sit on a seat (by seat, I mean rows of concrete benches) and wonder who had sat in the same seat over the past two ... read more

Travelling to New York was nothing special. However... I did get to experience a Detla ammenity random wittnessed.... personal TV screens in which I could play trivia and poker with other occupants of the plane. That was something new to me. I won both poker and trivia by the way, followed by Will and then the parents. The Wyoming clan put everybody else in their place! That was great and fun, and then we got to NY! My previous examples of overseas flight can be summed up by one scenario. Me... in the middle...stuck between the wall and a very obese...and very foreign indiviudal (usually male). In which case the very large foreign individual commemces to either talk, snore, or fart the entire way across the Atlantic Ocean. Hence, causing me to feel uncomfortable, not hungry, ... read more

Middle East » Lebanon April 9th 2007

I’m sitting outside a Starbucks in Achrafiyeh when a group of men with walkie talkies flood the street. They’re wearing leather jackets and cheap sunglasses and toting around big cardboard boxes that are straining at the bottom. They’ve unfurled a few flags around the square - bright white banners with a single green cedar in the middle - and tied them to the trees and telephone poles. Then they start flagging down passing cars. I go over to see what the commotion’s all about, and they tell me that they’re with the Lebanese Forces, handing out candy for Easter. Sure enough, one of the guys mumbles into his walkie talkie and makes a few quick hand signals across the street, and his partner comes along with a little plastic baggie full of cookies and chocolate ... read more

This is how it goes.. Life in this city is quite plain...the thing that makes it so special is it's brilliant colour. While walking on the strees you can never see the same colour in ever building. There are blue, pink, green, red, yellow, purple, orange..and so on and so forth. Streets are clean, poeple are young and smiling, everywhere the shops are calling you to taste their goodies, restaurants, chocolate shops, icecream corners...mmmmm.... One of my students once told me "If Eskisehir had a sea, it would be the perfect place to live in." and that's true. I can say that the only bad thing was the lack of a beach, a swimming pool or a sea. Besides that, it was very nice: no need to travel by car/tram/bus every day, because you can as ... read more

We had quite an interesting day following Petra. We head north and stopped first at the ruins of an old Crusader castle called Shobak, built high up on a hilltop, one of several in the Jordanian countryside. The road leading up to it was very steep, single lane with a sheer drop 1 foot off the edge of the road. Amazing views from the top though, of course! The knights used these views to effect, as it's positioned in one of the three main routes running north-south through Jordan, and it allowed them to see anyone moving through the corridor and thus control trade routes. The castle was once captured by Saladin after a 2 year siege. Following some more twisty turny narrow mountainside roads, we proceeded to a little village on the edge of a ... read more

Turkish Delight Middle East » Turkey » Istanbul By libverApril 9th 2007Lib and Ver From Egypt, Alison, Adrian and I made our way to Turkey for 6 days of mosques, bazaars, whirling dervishes and copious amounts of apple tea. We stayed on the European side of Istanbul in Beyazit, probably a little too close to the sprawling Grand Bazaar as we kept returning to haggle over carpets, jewellery and funny hats. We spent our days eating all different variations of turkish delight (allegedly an aphrodisiac), catching the ferry down the Bosphorous, wandering through Topkapi Palace and learning about the inner workings of the palace harem, and sitting in the sunny co... read more

Alright.... so its been a few days.... sorry to have kept you waiting. As I last left off I was being woken up much to early by the prayers coming from the six minarets of the Blue Mosque across the street. That was around fivish in the morning, two and a half hours later I found myself along with Will eating a delicious breakfast in our room. The service at the hotel was unlike anything I have experienced before. They even brought a private toaster in our room so our bread toasting would be as fresh as possible. I think it took nearly ten minutes for the waiter to prepare our early morning feast. It was although Wolfgang Puck himself had entered our domain and was making sure everything was perfect for..... wait for it!...... ... read more

Middle East » Cyprus April 9th 2007

Well, well - who would have thought that I would end up back in Cyprus with my Egyptian husband? After the harrowing adventure in Cairo to get Ahmed his first ever visa to a European country, we were off on a shaky EgyptAir flight to the lovely island of Cyprus. There are certain places in the world that I feel are truly just great hangout spots (Alexandria, Venice, that cool restaurant on the Nile in Luxor where I eat at), and Cyprus is certainly in this category, too. Not one particular place - just the whole island itself. We started out staying in Larnaka for a couple of nights (by the way, if you're looking for a nice apartment hotel, stay at Petrou Bros. Apartments - lousy parking, but great location overall). From this city, ... read more
