What an experience. We have a friend (Simon from Carson Group) over from NZ at the moment. So for that reason, as well as the fact that we have a virgin Jeep Wrangler, we decided to try a bit of wadi bashing. We picked an easy route out of the off road guide, which is also apparently the most spectacular Wadi in the UAE to visit. Its byline is " The Grand Canyon of the Middle East". However we wouldn't know. The route goes into Oman so you have to take your passports, however my cousin James didn't have his with him as it is away getting a residency visa, but we thought that we would try and blag our way through with a copy of it and his drivers license. Unfortunatly the border guards weren't ... read more

Roadtrip + JordanSo I figured out a way to type as much as i want before i actually use the internet so now I am going to write out a lot more as to what happened over the past week or so. I'll take you back to the road trip which started about 4-5 days after birthright and brought us from Tel-Aviv to Eilat. Mike, Aaron (a guy we met on birthright) and myself rented a car in the late afternoon and we headed up north towards the Golan hights in the hopes of reaching the city of Katzrin so Mike could exchange his 800 Shekel (200$) bottle of wine. Unfortunately, before we could even get past Tel-Aviv, Mike was already nodding off behind the wheel. After a quick coffee break we were back on the ... read more

The time has come to say goodbye to this lovely palace and all that goes with it! The property truly is stunning as are the majority of the nearly one thousand staff. But with anything this big there comes politics and in fighting and this is what I cannot stand about this place. Can and will any hotel ever stack up to this one? But believe me it is only beautiful on the outside. I would rather work in a smaller property where I can actually do my job and enjoy my work! I am still in talks with The Rotana group in Dubai and if all goes well then I should start at The Al Bustan Rotana in about three weeks. A smaller property that deals in mainly corporate business. More managable at 275 ... read more

On June 20 we departed for Israel on our long anticipated pilgrimage to the Holy Land. One of the precepts of the Bahá’í Faith is that each believer should try to make a pilgrimage to Bahá’í holy places at least once in their lifetime. Unlike the pilgrimages of other faiths, Bahá’ís must make a request for pilgrimage to the Universal House of Justice in Haifa. The UHJ is the nine-member body that governs the Faith internationally. Once you have made that request, you are placed on a waiting list, which usually takes about five to six years. This insures that the nine-day experience is maximized for the Bahá’í believers, who are given wonderful tours, with well-trained guides and have the opportunity to spend time with other Bahá’ís from all over the world who speak the same ... read more

Although I am japanese (ie Asian), meaning that I can't dance for bloody hell, I still try and make the best out of it by compensating with my bellydancing skills. Whether it be NYC or Maku, i've been swimming in bling! This turned out quite promising with my booty-shaking and techno playing ipod, as like a popular cheap whore, money was thrown at me like hotcakes.I even did the 'dishwashing' and 'lawn-mowing' routine' that I learned from a gay classmate. I had the opportunity to encounter a jolly old wedding in the little town of Maku in the Western Azerbaijan by the Turkish border. It was random, as I was just returning from my visit to St Thaddeus' church a few miles away. We saw the event going on in the middle of the streets ... read more

June 22, 2007 So I’m in Tel Aviv with full Internet access, but only in the lobby. Still, it’s better than the situation was before, but it’s weird having a different IP address. Every time I use AOL to get to Google, it takes me to the German site. On Internet Explorer, it takes me to the Israeli one, which makes a lot more sense but is nevertheless annoying. I miss Jerusalem. I don’t really miss the scenery so much—it’ll always be ther for me—but I miss the people. I made good friends there and I made them quickly. Here, not so much. I’m living in the Tel Aviv University dorms, but there’s not much social life here. People use their rooms for sleeping and that’s pretty much it. Nobody really hangs out in the halls ... read more

Welcome to the next phase of this blog. You guessed it: another fantastic group from Temple Beth El of Northern Valley (Closter, New Jersey) is about to take off for Israel. This time we are a total of 18 -- that stands for "Chai" - life. Well, it will be a lively group. Three empty nester couples, and three families. With children ages 6, 8, 13, 13, 13, and 17. Pretty cool.... The first half of the group is going a few days early to do a pre-tour to Eilat and Jordan, specifically to see Petra. It will be my 3rd time there - but this time we hope to also take in the nighttimes "show" when they light it up with candles. More in a few days. We will do our best, as usual, to ... read more

... read more
