So after a lot of sad goodbyes, myself and Vinny headed off on our travels First stop... Abu Dhabi! We arrived at 7am to 30 degree weather and a lot of taxi touts! Ended up throwing our bags and then ourselves into a moving taxi that was pulling up illegally and so paid a little bit less to get to our hotel than a standard taxi!! We are backpackers now so every penny counts! We checked into five star luxury hotel the Sheraton (I know I know we are supposed to be backpacking but got a really good deal through a friend!) for some R n R and it was savage! After massive breakfast, we headed to the pool where we slept for hours under a palm tree! Dinner in the hotel and an early night. ... read more

Hello family, friends and strangers! First week back to school with students is complete and I am LOVIN' it! I have been transferred to an all girls school, Khadeeja Al Kubra. Teaching Grade 4. A far cry from the all boys school that I requested but I really like my school, my co-workers, the grade level AND the girls are really sweet also....so an unexpected bonus. An even better bonus is that I am only a 30 minute walk from home...a short bus ride....and/or $2.00 cab ride (when my arms are too full to walk...u know teachers...lol). I have included some pics from my classroom (which I LOVE...don't neglect to notice the cool IKEA lamp in the reading corner...all the Arabic teachers keep coming in to my class to check it out) and my students. Good Day Family, Friends and Strangers, Went kayaking early this morning (7 a.m. - before the heat , only 30 degrees C then, lol) in the Mangroves, which to my surprise were VERY close to where I live. One of the teachers (Jessica) from Terri's school arranged the whole thing, and with a coupon (2 for 1).....it only cost 75 drms each (like $20. CAD). I am now seriously considering purchasing a used kayak (not too expensive) and a membership, so I can do this every week (or more)....LOVED IT! What a great upper body workout while enjoying the serenity and nature of the groves. Plus, it is summer all year round here, so I would get more use out of it here than at home. However, we were on the water for close to 3 ... read more

... read more

This weekend we had the utmost pleasure of undertaking a return visit to the Danat Resort at Jebel Dhanna. You may remember from a lot of blogs ago that a previous, rather disasterous visit to this resort had been undertaken. Well at the end of that visit I had written a letter to the management of the resort explaining that we hadn't had a very good visit, but that it had been made so much better through the efforts of a particular staff member. Well of course the GM of the resort had written back to me saying that he was so sorry that we hadn't had a very good time and that they were going to give me a free night's stay there. So this weekend we went back up to the resort to take ... read more

16 November 2007. We left the car at the camping at Islamabad and found a taxi to the airport: the 4-week visit to South Africa to see our sons and to have a break from travelling had started. Flying is not something you can dwell on extensively. The most remarkable experience was the 8-hour stopover in Abu Dhabi. Not so much the waiting and lack of proper conveniences as well as the construction of the International flight hall. It is a large shopping centre cum waiting room. There are only chairs to sit in, not to lie on, hence my remark about the lack of conveniences. But the way it is constructed - and finished - deserves a remark. The ground floor houses shops, restaurants and other niceties all along the outer walls. In the centre ... read more

Well we have just returned from a stay at the Danat Resort at Jebel Dhanna for Eid.Our arrival was not the most auspicious as we were overlooked by the check in staff initially and were not served a welcome beverage as other guests were that we observed. And then further on into our stay we had the misfortune of a couple of bad encounters with other staff members. Chelle had booked herself in for a spa treatment and when she presented myself at the spa at the appointed time she was informed that the room that they would be using for my treatment had been given over to a massage and could I please come back again later on for my treatment. She was most surprised at this as she had booked my treatment 6 hours ... read more
