Upon first observations, I can confidently say Istanbul is quite the multicultural milkshake. That, and I am completely charmed by its cobbled streets leading towards the sea. What a condensed, sprawling, hodge-podge of people and life! Demographics say its 78 percent Turks, but there are so many other faces. That's 15 million people tightly packed into stackable buildings, some within the confines of a walled city, with dozens of mosque domes predominantly gleaming in the midday sun. Landfall finds me in the old city European part of Istanbul, with less than a week to explore both sides of the Bosporus. Its not very often I make strategically sound travel decisions at last minute, but my unassuming hotel is lovely and perfectly situated, within walking distance to everything touristy. Well done you. Our hotel on this side is a converted old building from 1867 by the architect Antione Tedeschi. It sits in the banking and gold district of Galata. It is a beautiful reflection of its historical past, updated with all the modern conveniences of a high end hotel. The modern elevator, barely large enough for three adults, is only slightly bigger than the original cage-style elevators, still present today. Our morning began with a quick breakfast and a tram ride back to the Grand Bazaar. None of us felt, (well maybe Dave did) that we had explored enough of the icon the first time. We steeled ourselves for the adventures ahead and plunged in again. The bazaar is a fascinating place, where every vendor has a brother or cousin who sells rugs. No purchase made ended without ... read more

As I write this post, I am looking out the window of our beautiful cruise ship, at the setting sun over the Marmara Sea. The Star Legend is a small, 200 passenger vessel in the Windstar Cruise Line. It provides all the amenities of the larger cruise lines, minus the crowds. We sailed out of the harbor at precisely 5pm, waving goodbye to the Istanbul coastline with its striking minarets and ancient coastal history. The sea is calm and skies are clear which should make for a peaceful night of sailing. Before we boarded though, we had one last highlight of ancient Istanbul to explore, the Galata Tower. As I previously mentioned, it was the highest point of the Genoese walled city. Built in 1453, the Genoese could watch the strait for uninvited ships. Sounding an ... read more

Back in Istanbul but this time on the “newer” side. Istanbul is divided on two continents, Europe and Asia. Where we stayed last time was the Europe side where the original capital of the Roman/Christian, world was seated. Constantinople, now known as Istanbul, was founded by Emperor Justiniani then built up by Emperor Constantine who wanted Constantinople to become the Christian capital of the world. Later, after the Ottoman Seige, it would be seated in Rome. The newer side, where we are staying now was the site off the Genoese (Italian) walled city called Galata. In ancient times, the two sides were connected by a massive iron chain that sat on the bottom of the Bosphorus Strait. When under attack, they would pull the chain from both sides to raise it high enough, but just below ... read more

Today began with another traditional Turkish breakfast at the Green House Restaurant. I’m glad my sister doesn’t like honeycomb because I ate both our portions! Because she is restricting her fats I also got most of the olives! The fresh fruit and cappuccino was a treat too. We ate early because we wanted to get to the Topkapi Palace before all the crowds. I’m so glad we did because we spent hours there, walking the entire complex, an amazing labyrinth of luxury and handmade beauty. The palace construction was ordered by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror and began in 1459. It was the was the administration center of the Ottoman Empire as well as the home of all the sultans until 1923, the end of the empire. It continues to house the official library, holy relics and ... read more

Turkey, Turkey, Turkey! How I have missed your beautiful sights, sounds, smells and warm culture! For those of you who do not know, Sharon and I had the good fortune to have lived in Turkey when we were growing up. Dad was the Naval Attache to NATO and we lived in Izmir. That is the main reason for this trip. Having lost our Mom two years ago and Dad just this summer, we decided a memorial tour of Turkey was appropriate to honor them in some very special ways. We will visit all of the destinations we enjoyed as a family and more. Our Turkish odyssey began with a quick Turkish breakfast that included two of my favorites, Kalamata olives and ekmek (bread) with honey on the comb. It was delightful! From there we headed to ... read more

There is a lot to be said for perseverance. After all the trials and tribulations of yesterday, things could not have been more different today. A fresh start this morning began with a quick trip back to the airport at 9:30. The plan was to get to the Air France counter to resolve the standby situation and to get actual tickets for us all. The website said the Air France desk opened at 10am but the reality was noon. So we found a quiet corner to park while Sharon and Delta talked once again to be sure I actually have a seat. Reassured I did, she said we couldn't do anything more until the Air France counter opened to speak with the airline directly. At 11:45 we made sure to be first in line, and providence ... read more

It's over. Our flight today is at 8:05pm and our pick up for airport transfer is at 3:30pm so we have time to kill.We both decide to go for a morning walk. I head for the water from to the south of us, somewhere I haven't visited. There are green spaces but oddly they are fenced off, so just for show and not for use. Fishermen try their early morning luck off the walk way. All is good until the rain rolls in, and all I can do is hide under a tree. Now wet, I wait out the showers and head back to the apartment to dry out my clothes. We go down to the bikes and Jeff finishes his pack and we're done by 11:30am, 4 hours to kill. We head off in different ... read more

Let's start with where I left off yesterday. On the way to the airport in Cappadocia to return back to Istanbul on an 8:25pm flight landing in Istanbul at 9:55pm. Our hope was to be out of the airport by 10:30pm and back at the hotel by 11:30pm. Well, that was a good plan - until it wasn't. We checked in and all was good, then shortly after that we noticed our flight had been delayed to 9:30pm, that meant not getting back until after midnight some time. We had meant an Australian Father/Daughter couple on our tour (Keith and Georgia) and they were travelling on the same flight back to Istanbul. We sat and chatted and then noticed that the flight had been delayed again, until 10:30pm. Argh, what a long day this was becoming, ... read more

It was a late night last night due to the river cruise so there was certainly no hurry to get up this morning. We also had very little on the list of things to do, as most of the big ticket items had already been done. We left the apartment about 10am and walked over the hill (again) and down to the Saltanahmet area. Two things on the list here were to finally go to the Ayasofya Mosque which was completed in 537AD. It's interior is showing signs of wear with patches of the ceiling decoration having come away. Its still one of the longest lines to get into, thankfully we beat the peak period and it only took about 20 minutes to get in. After that Jeff and Tom went to the Basilica Cistern which ... read more
