March 2, 2006 (Antakya, Turkey) Sean: We smuggled cigarettes and liquor across the Turkish border. Well, it wasn’t quite Midnight Express, but Parliament 100’s and Johnny Walker Red aren’t exactly heroin either. Let me back up and tell the story. Leaving Aleppo, Syria this morning, we thought it was going to be a bit of a headache because the travel agency that “invited” us into the country had to escort us out as well. This wasn’t a problem for the company, it’s what they do, but the communications between the boss and our escort must be nonexistent because our escort showed up on the wrong day asking if we were ready. “Huh? Ready for what?” I asked the complete stranger. When he replied what he was there to do, I told him he needed to talk ... read more

I'm back in Istanbul for my last day in Turkey and to wash the dirt of my body from the trip I decided to go have a Turkish bath. I decided to go to the most famous hamam in Istanbul, which is 300 years old and has been used in everything from soap adds to an Indiana Jones film. I was slightly nervous at the thought of being violated by some huge Turkish guy, but it all turned out ok. They give you a sheet to change into and some ridiculous wooden flip-flop things to walk around in. First they sent me to the hot room, which was this amazing marble steam room. On all the walls are basins which you can run water into and wash yourself. They left me to steam for about 10 ... read more

The travelling was catching up with us a bit so we enjoyed a sleep in until 0930 and had omelets for breakfast upstairs in the bar area. The Grand Bazaar was only a few kilometres away from the hostel but we caught a tram anyway as we’d done plenty of walking over the previous weeks. Our plan for the Grand Bazaar was to roam around for a while, getting a feel for the place and the goods for sale, if we could get an idea of what was selling for what, we’d be in a better position to get the deals when they came up. The Grand Bazaar is about 90% undercover and has over 60 streets within it. Whilst the Moroccan souqs had been a mishmash of actual shops and open areas, this was more ... read more

Our first real stop in Istanbul was Aya Sofya(or Aghia Sophia, or Hagia Sophia depending on where you get your information)… but I digress… Located two blocks from our hostel, Aya Sofya has been many things throughout its 1400 years of existence but to broadly give you an idea it has been a place of worship for whatever the religion-du-jour has been in Istanbul throughout its tormented past. The number of times that Istanbul / Constantinople has been overtaken by various empires and religions cannot be counted on one hand. As the early 21st century has been fairly kind to the region – it is currently a museum. The entrance was carefully guarded by dozens of “tour guides” but, fortunately for us, they were not nearly as persistent as the Moroccan ones. Lonely Planet had a ... read more

Not too much to report I’m afraid. We were up early and had no drama on the Royal Air Maroc flight to Istanbul. On arrival at 1430 local time, we were pointed to the ticket counter for the train to town and proceeded to purchase our tickets. It was a long trip into Aksaray. I was surprised that the city was so big – we were going at a reasonable speed through the suburbs and it felt as though the buildings were flying past the windows forever although, in reality, it was less than an hour. We disembarked at Aksaray, walked a block and caught a tram the final distance to Sultanahmet in Old Istanbul. Using the Lonely Planet, we tried to get accommodation at Nayla Palace Pension only to confirm that a favourable review in ... read more

over the weekend i went with a couple of friends to sultanumet, the old part of istnabul where byzantium was first located and then constantinopole after that. it is full of history and character, containing the blue mosque, haggia sophia, topkapi palace, the cistern, grand bazaar, spice bazaar, hippodrome, and many other historic mosques and such. it is quite an amazing place and we spent the whole day there walking around and seeing some of it. i skipped topkapi palace because it takes a whole day by itself so i will need to return for just that. i also skipped the cistern since my friends had already done it. it didn't matter though because what we saw was pretty impressive on its own. the blue mosque is one of the most impressive buildings i have ever ... read more

merhaba everyone. if you hadn't figured it out, merhaba means hello in turkish. its one of about 10 words that i have learned here. is it rude of me to think that they should speak english instead of me speaking turkish? i am not sure. maybe i am just being an obnoxious american. anyway, i am still here in istanbul as i haven't made it out of the city to do any traveling yet. there is continuous talk of a weekend trip to bulgaria but it never seams to materialize. hopefully it wil happen soon as i am keen to see some things and get on the road. i love this city and am enjoying it tremendously but i didn't just come here to see istanbul, i came here to study (ha) and see some of ... read more

I arrived in Istanbul early in the afternoon of the 27th and caught the really modern train and tram system into the city. It was really easy to use and very cheap (2.2 YTL). I had a ripoff dinner with some people from the hostel including a 'local', Orky, who took us to the restuarant. She was a crazy American-Turk and it was impossible to get a word in edgeways. Oh well, you win some you lose some. The next day, an American guy Jim from Denver, and I went to the Blue Mosque. It has a massive courtyard and the inside of the mosque is the same size. On the other side of the park is the Aya Sofia which is a Greek Orthodox Church which was converted into a mosque. It is incredible inside ... read more
