Friday after work we haded to Luton and, after very pleasant meal headed off with Nicky and Alan to quiz night which was fun. Saturday we got some food at the airport and good seats on th Easyjet plane to Istanbul. We were held up for over an hour as someone had forgotten to close a valve after filling the drinking and toilet water tanks. It didn't take long to fix but we missed our slot. Apart fro that the flight was fine. We took a taxi to the hotel as it was getting late and we were hungry. Had a very good meal and a few beers then watched the basketball in which Turkey won the semi final. There was much jubilation. Yesterday we almost missed breakfast. Then all day long it rained and rained ... read more

Day 02 30th August 2010 - Istanbul More city roaming. Visited the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar. Both were very very busy and were not actually very cheap. By the sea front, locals were reeling in fish and dropping them straight onto a giant hot plate. Had a great fish sandwich! Walked into the north of the city and caught the old tram up through the busy shopping area, to a large park, where a stage had been set up for the evenings Ramadan festivities. Walked back down, to a restaurant/bar that a friend recommended, called “Lib-Deryia”. It was in the penthouse of a large apartment block - very weird entrance - felt like we had gone to the wrong place. When we got to the top, we were pleased to find a great bar ... read more

Day 01 29th August 2010 - Departing the UK - Istanbul 3am wakeup at Laetitia's in Wimbledon. Mad rush to get everything crammed into backpacks before jumping in a cab straight to Gatwick for a 6am flight to Istanbul. Unfortunately I lost my wallet the day before leaving, so I spent a lot of time during the cab journey to the airport and waiting at the airport; on the phone, cancelling debit and credit cards, and trying to organise new cards to be sent to mums address for her to FedEx to somewhere on our travels, e.g. the hostel in Beijing! Great feeling to get on the first plane. No work for 5 months! Landed in Istanbul - very hot - temperature in the mid to late 30's. Got chatting to the man on the plane ... read more

Istanbul came be a relatively tame introduction to Turkish men, who later become a defining feature of my trip. However, I was grateful I’d decided on Turkey over my original plan of going to Morocco after some of the tales I’d heard from western women who’d ‘escaped’ the country, for lack of a better phrase. One of the first men I’d met in Istanbul proclaimed that his shop would “make pleasure for my eyes” and proceeded to drag me in, shortly followed by the mystical appearance of apple tea, a recurring feature. He then presented a series of pashminas which he rubbed gently on my cheeks and insisted on wrapping around my neck. Quick exit needed! I walked a short way down the road and, due to my ongoing illness from back home, had quite a ... read more

After a disappointing dinner, Barry and I decided to experience a Turkish Bath... We went to one of the most famous baths in Istanbul, The Cemberlitas Hamami, built by architect Sinan in 1584. It is one of the most important works of the 16th century Ottoman architecture. As I have never experienced a Turkish bath before - I had no idea of what to expect... Barry had apparently visited one in Damascus years ago so was familiar, I however, was not. We signed up for the "luxury package" and Barry went off to the men's section, and I the women's. I was led to a locker room, and given a towel and slippers. I then was escorted into a huge, domed steam room, totally clad in white marble. The "attendant" then proceeded to whip off my ... read more

Well after an action packed day 2, How can you beat getting tear-gassed? We stayed away from the part of the city with the IMF conference... we saw the police chopper in the distance and stayed in Sultanhamet... Still LOTS to see... This place is just packed with history... Today, we had to take our bikes to the shop to get fixed.. Unfortunately, the plane ride wasn't that kind on them. I had a soft brake, and Barry’s rim was bent. So first thing we made our way to the shop.. The gentleman that owned the bike shop was a professional cyclist himself... He managed to fix mine up in no time, but we had to leave Barry's there for the day. So after bringing my bike back to the hotel, we set out to see ... read more

Well today was an interesting day.... Started out pretty normal... Sunny and hot today - good change from yesterday :) we started off at the Blue Mosque, although we just stayed on the grounds.. We are going to go back later when we are dressed more appropriately... in order to enter a mosque, arms and legs must be completely covered, and women must wear a headscarf. The headscarves were available at the entrance, however we were both wearing shorts, so we decided we would come back later. Quite a spectacular building - can't wait to see it inside! Over across the street to Aya Sophia - built in 537 AD by Justinian I as a Christian Basilica - the forth largest in the world I might add... the building has seen several additions, conversions and restorations ... read more

Istanbul - Day 1 The flight over was pretty smooth, small delay in Calgary, and small children sitting behind us kicking our chairs for 8 hours... other than that...The movies were good so they kept me from strangling them. We got into Istanbul at 1pm, I was dead tired... Little bit of a panic episode, while they tried to find our bikes... turns out they were just "slow" to unload them... but it was about 20min or so after everyone else got their bags, that we got our bikes. I don't think I remember seeing Barry so stressed! Anyway, after an hour an half trying to put the bikes together, I was getting antsy and I’m now sooo tired, my eyes are rolling to the back of my head. We still don't know if we have ... read more

The Air Maroc flight was uneventful, and I was back in Istanbul. A taxi to the hotel and then meet the roommate, and down to meet a new group. This time there were a group of 8 friends from the US and four Australians. Istanbul or at least the Sultanahmet was a now familiar and welcoming place having been through back in June. The sounds of the call to prayer, the hustle on the street were all as it should be. We had an enjoyable dinner in the one of the restaurant areas and a small wander through the area in the evening. The following day was a guided walk where we went inside the Blue Mosque to admire it’s architecture, although we timed it so there were large numbers of groups from some cruise boats ... read more

Today our daughter was nearly kidnapped. By a high powered Turkish dignitary. Never let your guard down. (So as to manage expectations, let me add the disclaimer that this blogger tends to exaggerate a tad). It all started at Topkapi Palace. Think harems and gardens and all things Arabian-nightsish and you probably have a good idea of what Topkapi might have once been. Today though, you will need to add a whole lot of imagination to garnish what is now one giant museum. Its worth a visit, but just don't go getting your hopes up too high. The palace grounds consist of a series of courtyards, each bordered with rooms containing lots and lots of museum pieces. Lots of jewels, lots of swords. Most interesting was lots of clothes belonging to really really fat sultans. You ... read more
