Today we were ın Kapadokya. Kapadokya ıs a volcanıc regıon, wıth a lot of ash and volcanıc dust whıch ıs very soft. Apparently you can carve yourself a root cellar ın a matter of a couple of hours, and ın fact at one poınt we saw a man wıdenıng the road ın front of hıs home usıng an electrıc jıgsaw. At varıous tımes, people have buılt extensıve storage / refuges / churches / monasterıes ınto the sıdes of mountaıns, and we vısıted some of them today. The fırst 3 pıctures are from Göreme, the underground "cıty" (our guıde says ıt was mostly used to store crops and make wıne, and only occasıonally to lıve ın for a few weeks durıng ınvasıons and tımes of danger). The spaces have a very organıc shape that remınmded me of ... read more

So last nıght there was an optıonal evenıng outıng to a "Turkısh Folklorıc Nıght" near our hotel. Everyone was tıred from gettıng up at 5 thıs mornıng and there was some debate about goıng, but fınally 2 of the famılıes decıded to do ıt. (I wanted to go from the begınnıng, even though I thought ıt would probably be eıther hokey or humorless, because I felt lıke beıng who I am I needed to get some sense of tradıtıonal musıc and dance ıf possıble). About 10 mınutes before we left, we dıscovered (by means of very loud musıc) that a weddıng was startıng ın the courtyard of our hotel, and whıle of course we weren't ınvıted, we dıd watch a bıt from a balcony. The brıde was lookıng radıant and dancıng (Mıddle-Eastern style) wıth a varıety ... read more

We left Istanbul and headed inland to Cappadocia. It's incredible here, the landscape is like something from a different planet. There are solid towering cones all over the landscape that were formed from ancient volcanic erosion. The locals call the cone- like formations "fairy Chimney's". Apparently because they couldn't imagine humans building them, so they figured fairies did (?). The history in this region is quite overwhelming and we hardly managed to get it all. But, it's mentioned in the bible and has been inhabited since the 6th century BC! Many of the caves were transformed into functional spaces and used as houses, churches, and factories. Entire cities were built using the structures. Unfortunately the iconic intolerance of Muslim invaders and European treasure hunters is apparent everywhere. Many of the frescos and ruins in Turkey have ... read more

We went out the other night to the restaurant in the park again. We happened in on a family festival happening. I asked the waiter and with a few words he jestered it was the muslim tradition of the coming of manhood for a young man. Other wise known as a circumcision party We were up on a balcony overlooking all what was going on. we must have arrived near the end all the men were seated in another area of the park while all the women and children were up dancing to traditional turkish music and dressed up very nicely. They had a clown running around the party that is used to distract the children of the goings on (snip). It was really something to see how much richness in their traditional culture and religion ... read more

Well we only had minor damage today. Joe landed pretty hard and bucked the fuslage a bit. Everyone is trying to fix yesterdays damage as I try to properly pace my self as the Jack Daniel van just opened and are serving. It's quite something how passionate these guys are in their planes. My goal is to stay out of their way and not step on the wingtips AGAIN. We are currently in 24th place. Good thing there are only 25 teams or we would feel really bad. our goal is to stay ahead of the Romanians. Speaking of Romanians, there is a band of Romanian Gypsies which camp along one of the rivers on our way from the field to the hotel. barebones living, really something to see. I have asked our driver to stop ... read more

Got off the field late Sunday night from the opening ceremonies which were impressive. They were giving out free Jack Daniels Vodka and tequila by good looking girls in tight white shirts. Pictures to follow. We had a late night dinner and was curious as to what Crap Flakes were so when I received it I got Imitation Crab salad AKA Crap Flakes. We are at the field from 7am to 730pm so it is long days. There was lots of wind in the afternoon and some people are estimating up to $50,000 damage to planes colliding and crashing. Looks cool if your a spectator but not as a pilot. We had one of our own go into the trees but was repairable and got off lucky. We are adapting to the heat and is tolerable ... read more

Well we had a prep day and registration for the Worlds and did some practise flying. The day was going well till Joe buried his plane in the trees (Small poplar used for pulp). Some damage but he seems to feel it is fixable. I guess it was a misjudgment on his approach. We had the opening ceremonies and all marched on to the field in our own respective countries. It was quite well done and I will post the video on this when I return. Sorry for no pictures. I have had no time to get to it. We are going to be having some early mornings and late nights as there is flying from 8am to 7pm daily for the next 5 days. We have recruited Marco from the German team to help us ... read more
