On the bus to Safranbolu 10am August 16, 2014 We were heading to Ankara to collect visas. We needed to get this process going so left Sofia for Istanbul on an overnight bus from 10pm until 5.30am. We then got the 6am bus to Ankara, another 6 hours further on. For the record the HAS bus from Sofia was cramped. The Metro bus to Ankara was much more spacious so we could catch up on the sleep we did not get on the first leg. There is a great bussle in Ankara with a vibrancy and colour. The population of this modern city seems to live of the street. We booked an appointment via the internet at the Indian Embassy for the following Tuesday to get visas. Our first port of call was the Uzbekhistan embassy. ... read more

Tage. Und was ich an ihnen so mag- sie waren konsequent. Immer Sch..-Tage. Hab jetzt nicht direkt Lust alles nochmal auf Deutsch zu schreiben, daher hier ein englischer Text. Turkey, small road up into the mountains: Bend 90° left hand, road wet, gravel (slippery??), me in 3rd gear, bike skidded, black hole inmy memory. When I resurfaced: bike on right side, snuggled up against stone, me on back next to bike, no longer on it. After a while (non idea how long) car came, nice driver stopped instead of crashing into us. both - Paul and self back in u pright position. Wanted to take me to hospital/doctor to have me checked. I refused. What I really would have loved was Van, Vanman, Vanman's tea and a couple of enncouraging noises ... read more

We didn't do much in Ankara we just saw the grave of the first and seconded president of Turkey, we also saw his fancy cars and what they used to move his body to the tome it was a really interesting place. We then went to a city under ground it was started being built in the 7 hundreds. It was AMAZING we only saw 10%and it could fit 3000 people for 6-7 weeks. The city had 8 floors but the first 3 floors are just storage to fool the attackers. We then went to Cappodicia we had supper and went to bed. Good night all. Snake Wangler... read more

Hello you lot. I do hope you are all well. So...my time at the farm has come to an end. It wasn't the idle goat prodding I was expecting, instead I have spent the last two weeks building a house. Yes, a house. And not just any old house, no, a Cob house. Cob, for those who don’t know is a very old building material made from a combination of clay mud, straw and a dribble of water. You mash it all up, make it in to big blocks and away you go. Very simples but very very hard work, especially for an office softened chap like me. We started by making it by hand, using our feet to stomp the mix together, this was slow and hard We considered buying a cow to mash it ... read more

In Ankara is the mausoleum of the first President of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Our guide Ibo, brought to life this incredible man and his accomplishments through his thoughtful explanations which also touch on the humorous and human. Therefor, when we went through the mausoleum and museum, I was moved to tears. The Mausoleum is huge due to the awesome dimensions of the architecture, with simple clean marble lines and huge open spaces. The museum attached tries to teach of the difficult, painful sacrificial nature of the war that had to be fought to gain independence, democracy. It does not glorify. The museum also describes the hopes and dreams for the future of Turkey with explanations of the reforms that were made. Finally, the museum gave you glimpses of the man behind it all, through old ... read more

Geo: 39.935, 32.847I apologize for missing my post last night...the need for sleep was greater than my need to write!Let's start by announcing who were the first to correctly answer my contest questions. The first question asked the source of the "posh, posh traveling" song posted on September 3rd –the song is from that classic musical “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and the winner is my sister-in-law, Janet. She was the first respondent and had the correct answer. The second challenge was to name the book and author that had the line “Please sir, I want some more”. Several folks answered very quickly and accurately, but the winner was my cousin Lawson. Of course that quotation is from Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist."The wheels on the bus go 'round and ‘round, ‘round and ‘round, ‘ro... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the second of 18 posts I'll make about my trip to Turkey and the Balkans in 2013 and it will cover my second day in Ankara. The first visit of the day was the magnificent Kocatepe Mosque, built between 1967 and 1987. It was located quite literally just around the corner from where I was staying and I definitely recommend visiting it. It's very large and intricately decorated, and even better there was hardly any people there. The inside is beautiful with a really ornamented minbar (pulpet) and mihrab (the wall facing Mecca). From the mosque I took a bus back to Ulus and made my way over to the Roman baths, it's quite well preserved and a nice open air museum. Entrance was only three lira and was well ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the first of 18 posts that I'll make about a solo trip I did to Turkey and the Balkans in August 2013 and it will cover my first day in Ankara. The trip started out a bit poorly as my backpack broke at the airport in Copenhagen but it picked up as I met a nice girl named Amina on the plane and spent the duration of the flight talking to her. When I arrived in the morning I actually hadn't exchanged to any lira yet, I don't know why, I just guess I counted on my card to bring me where I needed to go but that wasn't quite right. Fortunately the bus driver was a nice man and let me ride for free to Kızılay Square. First things ... read more

CAPPADOCIA TO ANKARA, TURKEY—Monday, May 13, 2013 Altinyazi Hotel, Avanos, Cappadocia Region At 6:15 we watched the balloons again this morning. Today they went up and most stayed very low and then came toward town and the hotel much closer than yesterday. There were about 50 in the air at one time. Valerie got better pictures this morning as it was a little clearer. We heard at breakfast that someone from another tour group staying at this hotel got hurt when a balloon hit a house. They did look low enough to do so. As we were boarding the bus a group came back toting their very muddy, grassy shoes in their hands--guess they had to get out in a muddy, wet field after their ride. (On a sad note, while in Istanbul, we learned that ... read more
