So exactly 5 weeks from today I will be getting on a plane homebound....finally!! I really can't wait - I've already sent a box home, have a bag of clothes to give away and have packed 1 suitcase (full of long sleeve shirts, pants, etc. that I def won't be wearin from now til June 23). Have I mentioned how hot it's getting again - let's just put it this way - the water in my toilet bowl is boiling - NO JOKE/NO EXAGGERATION! I noticed this craziness last week when I lifted the lid and found the water bubbling away which continues to this day. You can see the heat rising out of it and see the condensation all over the lid and the seat - it's actually one of the craziest things I've seen! ... read more

So we're off to Sri Lanka tonight (technically 3:35 am friday morning with a taxi pick-up at 2am) for 10 days. We come back on Easter Sunday. I'm looking forward to a relaxing week on the beach with some sightseeing and definitely a ride on an elephant! I'm also really looking forward to being able to be lying on the beach with a drink in hand and a whole lotta fresh pineapple! There are a lot of buddhist sites that we are gonna go to and there is a hike that I want to do as well. We are planning on going north to Kandy for a few days to see some of these sites and visit a tea plantation before heading down south to the beaches. I'm definitely planning on spending my 26th birthday on ... read more

I've thought for years that airline stewardesses get a rough deal on looking good. The uniforms are reasonable except for KLM whose shade of blue suits nobody, but often the hats are ridiculous. For example, Servisair in the UK used to give it's check-in girls these awful boaters with a wide-brim; they looked like gauche public school girls - "I say, do you play Lacrosse?". I seem to recall BA had a corker some years back, a variation on a bowler hat I think, which has thankfully disappeared now. Anyway, I can't remember which airport I was in but a couple of years ago I saw some Emirates stewardesses and couldn't stop looking at them. The hat is an ordinary pillbox affair, but the scarf doubles as a veil and loops upwards over one ear ... read more

When I got home from work and I checked my email to find one from AUC (American University of Cairo) that congratulated me on being accepted into their graduate program. I was accepted into both of the programs that they have that I'm interested in... Center for Migration and Refugee Studies http://www.aucegypt.edu/ResearchatAUC/rc/cmrs/Pages/default.aspx Masters of Arts in International Human Rights Law http://www.aucegypt.edu/academics/dept/law/majmin/Pages/InternationalHumanRightsLawMA.aspx It's possible to get a dual diploma of sorts so until I figure out how that works and if its possible for me to do it then I haven't fully made my decision yet as to which program I will attend!!! However, this is def my decision to go to AUC rather than George Mason in D.C. (which I still haven’t heard back about). The Conflict Resolution program at GMU is much more broad and ... read more

I just received an email from George Mason University stating that it wouldn't be until the end of March or early April until I hear back from them as to whether or not I have been accepted. I've literally been coming home every day from work checkin my account to see if there is an answer and now only to find out I'm still gonna have to wait another month, ugh! I won't hear back from AUC until the end of April or early May...I just feel as if I have been waiting forever already and am sooo anxious to know if I'll be going to school or not next year. I have been applying for jobs as a back-up plan - Africa and Middle East so I will at least be doing "something" next year. ... read more

We departed Brisbane just before midnight on 26th February and after 2 pleasant flights arrived in Doha. We were 2 of only a handful to stop here and stood out amongst the arabs in their flowing robes and the women with only their eyes visible. Doha is a relaxed introduction to our travels and we have spent 2 lazy days wandering the Corniche ,souk and visiting the excellent museum of Islamic art. This place is much more Islamic than UAE but I think much nicer. On to Tunisia tomorrow.... read more

Hovedstaden heter ... read more

I know, I know it's been...months since I've written. It's just it only took months to get internet and then I just never really had the time to write a blog and when I did have time I just didn't feel up to it. It's just that there isn't much going on over here to write home about. I'm working...not nearly as fun as last year's year in Africa. So I figured it was probably time since my mom hsa nearly threatened my life for not having written one sooner! My kids just had their 2nd term exams this week and all did really well. I have 31 in my class (was 30 until this past monday). They're all around 3 or 4 years of age (one child was even 2 1/2 when he started school)! ... read more

Okay, after a long period of company deliberation it looks like I am actually going to go to Qatar to work. Eeek, my head now says 'be careful what you wish for'! That's not entirely true but I do know this is where the challenge begins. I don't really know what to expect, or necessarily expect it to be a good experience but I am desperately hoping it will be and the intention is to work from Doha for up to 9-10 months...I will take it a month at a time! The obvious downsides are being away from my beloved family and close friends (you know who you are) and the expectation that I will have to work very very hard, however I am optimistic about finding some rich experiences that will go some way to ... read more

We left Manila 5 pm of October 9, 2008 for a nearly 10 hr flight to arrive in Doha, Qatar well before midnight of the same day. I met up with my traveling group where all I had was a list of names and a single cellphone number. But I'm pretty good at this game. I looked around, found all 3 'strangers' in my group. Never missed. A 100% batting average. The fourth guy I spotted when we landed in Doha. I knew it was him the moment we stopped to get our bearings to prepare to leave the airport. Not bad. I haven't lost my touch. Ahem. Qatar airlines is a good airline and my business class seat was most comfortable. As always, I couldn't resist watching all the movies I missed, and this flight ... read more
