... While leaving Dubai in only 3 weeks, I feel I could have at some point missed out the beauty surrounding the Emirates.... During last year's Ramadan my parents dropped in for a 1 month visit, and begged us to show them around the country.... This was a challenge. My parents are romantic traveler’s, in love with culture, adventure and architectural beauty. They are hippies at soul, thirsty for new discoveries.... Would the Burj or the Royal Mirage stand up to the level of the Pyramids, Thailand, Petra or Matchu Pichu? I had a job to do. I had to find what I though was inexistant in the Emirates.... and found that it couldn't be found, it did not have it. Hence my homework begun. India was relatively cheap for us, we could easily just fly ... read more

Day 9: After an early breakfast we were picked up at 8am and went on a tour of the mountains. We drove through Muscat in a 4WD vehicle and headed to the mountains. We visited a couple of villages seeing Nakhal Fort and a hot water spring before setting off up Wadi Bani Awf, a Wadi is the local word for dried out river. It was a bumpy track leading through the valley of the mountains. We stopped at some small villages, and then headed up the mountain on a small dirt track. The way was not always clear and our guide asked for directions in several villages, the usual response being we needed to turn around and go back the way we came. After a while we finally arrived at Bilad Seet a village for ... read more

Day 8: This was our last day of diving. We woke up and had breakfast as usual, sorted our stuff and got onto the dive boat. We were going in a different direction today, past Mascat to Fahal Island. The journey out was a bit rough and we were all relieved when the boat stopped. We kitted up and jumped into Shallow Reef, a negative entry to two pinnacles the tops of which were at 16m and 18m, so not that ‘Shallow’! We swam around, and Faisal our guide found a seahorse, it was about 10cm big, and was really great to see! We then found a sea snake, or rather it found us. I was taking a photo of it when it decided to swim towards me, it looked huge on my screen and I ... read more

Day 7: Thursday and Friday are the weekend in Oman, so we decided to stay at the centre and dive, as anywhere else would be very busy. After a big(ish) breakfast we got ready for our dive, analysing nitrox and getting our stuff onto the boat. We headed out to sea, it was not too rough, going around to the wreck again. This time our dive was much better, I was very chilled out. We started at the bow and worked backwards spending time going through walkways and into various holds and enclosed areas. We even swam through the wreck from one side to the other! There was a bit of a current and so taking photos of the nudibrancs was more difficult, but still got lots of nice shots of the wreck and fishes. It ... read more

Day 6: We spent the morning walking around looking at Muscat. We saw the sultans palace, some forts by the sea and then went to a small local museum which had some interesting displays and old photos of Oman from the 70’s. We then decided to walk to the souk, it was miles and ended up getting a taxi, we had a large glass of fresh mango juice and then did some shopping before stopping for Falafal for lunch. We headed back to the dive centre and chilled out before our dives. The first dive we did in the afternoon was Mermaid Cove (same as our first dive). More moray eels, nudibrancs, porcupine fish and little rays. Our second dive was a night dive, lion fish, free swimming morays, lots of urchins, a crayfish and some ... read more

Day 5: We decided to go diving, and did two dives in the morning. Our first dive was at Novice Bay, there were lots of small moray eels swimming free, which was unusual. We saw a little flat fish (plaice? Just needed the chips!), a few nudibrancs and I spotted a shrimp in a hole with a fish buddy. There were also lionfish. The scariest thing was a moray eel (honeycomb) that was HUGE! I got as close as I dared and signalled to mummy to take a picture, she misunderstood and thought I wanted one of her and it so got even closer than me, very brave! I was scared, the picture is crap as I wafted some sand in my attempt to escape the huge eel! We had a break at a cove, I ... read more

Day 4: We had a bit of a lie in before heading off on a tour in our own car. We went to another town called Nizwa we stopped at the big mosque on route in Mascat. It was very beautiful inside, the dome was coloured and the Mihrab was very impressive. We continued on our journey arriving in Nizwa around an hour later at the souk for some shopping where I bought some postcards. The ‘old’ souk was made out of mud and palm leaves and was much nicer than the newer bit, There were several sections, fruit and veg, spices, tourist stuff and fish. We then looked at Nizwa Fort an old Fort which had great views from the top. After further driving we arrived in Barhla, a town famous for pottery and looked ... read more

Day 3: During the night it was hot. Mummy put the fan on at about midnight, and then I counted the hours down til we had to get up. Not a good night sleep at all. The fan was noisy and I couldn’t get comfortable! We got up and had an early breakfast (7am) and then headed to the dive centre for a morning of diving. The donkey took our cylinders to the boat, we carried our bags jumped on and headed out to sea. Our first dive was a wreck called the Mounassia twin propellors were at approx 30m with shoals of snappers and other fish surrounding them. The wreck was a British Navy boat built in 1979 sunk in 2003 for divers. The coral life is starting to attach, lots of nudibrancs clung to ... read more

Day 2: I woke with a start having been poked by my mummy (who surprise, surprise was starving again) she was gagging for a cuppa so went for tea whist I dressed. I was very very sleepy still and felt a bit home sick as forgot were I was at first. I opened the door and walked along the beach to breakfast having pancakes and fruit soon helped revive me. We headed out to the old market and did lots of shopping and haggling (the Omani Rial is more expensive than the pound!), at curry with chippatis (yum yum) and then wondered back through the streets to our taxi. We rested, then went to the dive centre and sorted our stuff out. We headed out for a lovely first dive, nice and shallow to start with ... read more

Day 1: Wayne picked my mummy and I up and drove us to the airport. It was very kind of him. We checked in very quickly and made our way through the maze of security at Heathrow. As we arrived with loads of time to spear we had lot of time to mooch around the shops at duty free and had a Panini and some juice before we needed to move to the gate. We flew over with Gulf Air. The plane left at about 8.30pm, I watched ‘Chicken Little’ on the plane ate some food and then slept (I had 3 seats so was more comfi than I could have been). The journey was 7hrs, which is very long when you are already very tired. We had a small breakfast before landing. We arrived at ... read more
