After leaving Petra, we headed still farther south into the desert called Wadi Rum. We arrived at our camp just as the sun fell beyond the horizon, coating the impressive red rock formations in even redder light. The camp is one of many in Wadi Rum that caters to visitors with many stand up tents with two cots and bedding and a bar and a dance floor. We settled in and ate the delicious buffet of arabic food. They then cranked up the arabic music as the stars began to come out overhead. I danced some and watched my Arabic school mates dance their traditional dances, laughing when they tried to teach the rest of us. After some dancing, myself and three other girls decided to get away from it all and snuck off into ... read more

Wadi Rum is one of those magical places everybody should visit independently. Getting there is not that difficult-there are daily buses from Aqaba, in Rum village there are lot of busiessready local operators, and here is also a pretty affordable resthouse there. I arrived with the first minibus that day, and was met by a jeep owned by one of the local bedouins-a high, elegant man witch many western ladies probably would be big time attracted to. There are two ways to see Wadi Rum-by jeep or by camel. In my opinion the only way to see Rum properly, is to take an overnight trip with camel. Only then you will see ther dessert at its best during early morning, before sunset and also during the night. It is slow moving so you can really ... read more

Well the following day was a border crossing day, as in it took until 5pm for the 3pm ferry to get going, then getting through customs the other side was another hour. We stopped in Aqaba in Jordan, and immediately we could see the difference between Jordan and Turkey. The money was clean, like the city, and the people didn't hassle you. It was great! Our drive to Wadi Rum (the desert where Lawrence of Arabia shot to fame), where we were sleeping for the night. The drive took us up from the border crossing town and we could see 4 countries all at once. Obviously, we were in one, Jordan, but we could also see Elat in Israel, back across to Egypt and also across to Saudi Arabia. The camp we stayed at was ... read more

Yesterday I spent seven hours on a camel; re-enacting the march of El Lawrence (Peter O'Toole or Ralph Fiennes, I'm not picky :P) across the desert of Wadi Rum in Jordan before taking a lovely Bedouin-ette for my wife (pictures will follow - when I get around to uploading!). I learnt a few important lessons during the march that I think will prove useful for future El Lawrences: 1) Calling 'For Aqaba' at the top of your lungs while sitting atop a camel can be detrimental to your heath; it should not be attempted, no matter how good it looks on film. 2) Too many El Lawrences can spoil even a desert march - so make sure yours doesn't include more than one adament, arabic-learning, Lawrence lover - and defintely not three. (Note: I am not ... read more

It was over a sunrise breakfast in Wadi Rum that I was faced with my first big dilemma of the trip: to accept the invitation to become a "Bedoweeeeen woman" and shack up with our Bedouin cook in the desert for the rest of my days, or carry on with Dom to Egypt......a verrry tough call I know, but in the end I couldn't face slaving away over that fire every day, I'm a ceramic-hob kinda gal at heart! Besides, moustaches don't float my boat...... Wadi Rum is Lawrence of Arabia country - it was from this neck of the woods that Lawrence and his motley crew of arabs reeked havoc on the Ottoman army during the WWI - and it's home to some of the most spectacular desert scenery on the planet. We explored all ... read more

Geo: 29.9334, 36.0665Met our new tour leader Rabbi and we drove to Wadi Rum. The largest nature reserve in Jordan. Had a jeep ride through the desert, which was heaps of fun, especially when he tried to overtake the other two jeeps. Stopped at a Bedouin tent and had some local tea which tasted really nice. Then had a short camel ride around the area. We then headed to Petra. On the way we saw lots of shepherds with their herds of goats. Arrived in Petra in time for sunset.... read more
