Well, just to update you on what I have been up to recently, as you can see by the title, I had a quick trip into Jordan. This involved a 5-6 hour journey from Haifa down to Eilat in the south of the country so that I was able to enter Jordan via Aqaba. The journey south was fairly uneventful, but different to do it by car after doing it a couple of times by bus. We drove from Haifa to Tel Aviv, then to Beer Sheeva and down to Timna (where we did the desert hike from) and stayed overnight in a kibbutz that had lovely little cottages to rent on a B&B basis. After having a quick cup of tea and a freshen up we headed into Eilat……what a shock….all lights, noise, crowds and ... read more

DAY 40 We depart Aqaba this morning for the Wadi Rum protected area. We change to 4WD after a couple of hours on the bus. The ride was bumpy and no real thrills other than the natural beauty of the area. This area was created in 1998 and it covers 720 square kilometers of desert landscape from this valleys of sand and mountains of stone. Several Bedouin tribes live in and around the protect area earning most of their income from tourism. Our first stop is to view the 7 pillars of Wisdom, then off to Lawrence's spring and to the Lawrence house. Now these are places that Lawrence of Arabia might have been or had been there at least once. So everyone loves Lawrence because he is good for tourism. But the real interest is ... read more

We had the morning to explore Acaba, so Dan and I walked down by the beach out onto a pier where we took a few photos of Elat, the Israeli town that was just across the water. It was amazing to be so close to Israel. Apparently, Jordan gave land to Israel in exchange for more beachside land. In the land that Jordan gave away, Israel found oil. There is no oil in Jordan and the only exports that the country has is minerals including uranium. Later that day, we met up with a Sheik and his team at Wadi Rum Village, where we transferred our bags into 4WDs that took us out into Wadi Rum desert. From here we ventured out to see the sights of the desert. We visited Khazzalah Siq (Canyon) which was ... read more

Years ago, long before I first visited a desert, I used to have an impression in my mind that deserts are just dusty, hot and dry, nothing more than a vast ocean of sand and mere emptiness - that was about all I could come up with when thinking of deserts. To my surprise, I later found out that deserts are much more than that and of an unique magnificent beauty. Now, when I think of deserts, I can't help but to think of them as one of the most magical and mystical regions of this green blue planet of ours...! - From Amman towards south right into the Valley of the Moon - After some days in Petra we decided to head farther south and took the public bus to Wadi Rum which runs every ... read more

The next day, we headed to Wadi Rum, where we had a fun two days of hanging out in the desert. The desert of Wadi Rum, and throughout southern Jordan and Israel, is inhabited by traditionally nomadic Bedouins, who traditionally herd goats and sheep. There are still nomadic Bedouins, but driving through the desert, many of the tents were equipped with satellite dishes, making them seem more permanent, and many people now live in towns. Within the park, there is a Bedouin village, and many of the families operate tours or otherwise work in the park's tourism industry. We went with a group called Wadi Rum Adventures, run by a really nice guy named Mohammed. We took a jeep ride out through the desert and saw some of Wadi Rum's famous sites, including a bunch of ... read more

08h00. There's a knock on the door. Housekeeping! The alarm hasn't even gone off yet! Packing and leaving the rucksack at the door, I headed down to breakfast and made a packed lunch from the bread and cheese available! Ali came to collect us at 09h00 and we began the slow climb up from Petra to the summit of the surrounding hills and the plateau beyond. Upon reaching the summit, Ali stopped the bus to give us one last glimpse of Petra before we headed off along the King's Highway down to Wadi Rum. The journey across the desert began on the outskirts of Petra with red sandstone rocks and slowly moved to yellow sandstone before finishing up with brown sand. We passed several camels along the route and numerous goat herds; all the while the ... read more

The trip to Jordan's famous Wadi Rum was split into two parts due to the modifications for the Xmas New Years edition of the the tour. Normally the wake up call for the Ferry to Jordan from Egypt is 4:00am, being New Years Day, a generous 9:30am was given - phew. We arrived at night and settled down for a Bedouin buffet dinner and entertainment. The dinner was awesome awesome and more awesome. After Egyptian food and minor belly aches for a week it was a relief to consume as much of the delicious salad and succulent lamb as possible without consequence. The bedouins entertained us with songs, some games and some dancing, but being New Years Day, 10pm was bed time. It was generally cold in the main tent, and this continued overnight in the ... read more

The morning was quite adventurous and active, commencing with a camel ride around the camp we had stayed in. This was quite enjoyable and my camel appeared to be quite well behaved, although it sometimes decided the course itself and led the Bedouin boy instead of vice versa. After the camel ride we got in some jeeps and went for a fairly rapid tour of the nearby desert, bumping our way across dunes and salt pans. Since it was still quite early the sun was not hot enough to keep us warm in the breeze (the seats were on the back of the vehicle). We suffered quite a bit of wind and sun burn, but it was fun. Once we returned to the camp it was straight on the bus to nearby Aqaba. We all needed ... read more

Day 225 After a very long night with Carly suffering a case of gastro (of unknown origin) we packed up our gear set for Wadi Rum desert on a 4WW Safari with Sergi (A Spanish mate we had met on the epic journey from Neweiba. We were picked up by the same taxi driver and staggered aboard hoping he'd had a little more sleep then we had. In what seemed like no time (napping perhaps) we arrived at the Wadi Rum Visitors centre to purchase entrance tickets and met our guide's "Musalla' (the boss) and Aldi. From here we jumped in the back of the jeep and set off with another 8-9 4WD and jeeps for the not so deserted desert. Our first stop was The Spring where we were told to climb to the spring ... read more
