Petra 7-8 Oct When we arrived at Petra, Ian decided that as he had already seen the sights there, he would not stay but instead go direct to Aqaba and get his foot sorted out at a hospital. Gail and Jeremy decided that as they, too, had seen Petra before and Jeremy was not feeling too fit, they would go on to Aqaba as well. That left Milla and me on our own with the agreement that we would rejoin the others in two days’ time and so we made suitable meeting arrangements. At the Al Antab hotel we found that they had a campsite - for want of a better word - below the rear of the place, about 6 stories down the back of the hotel which was built on a steep slope. It ... read more

Hello All, I just finished a long day in Petra, Jordan which was so beautiful. We saw some temples and canyons and also successfully survived our first international adventure. We rode horses down and hiked back up which was really tiring but also fun. We are staying at really interesting kibutz now where the houses are made of straw and mud and there is hardly any waste. It is very ecological and also more socialist than most kibbutzim have become. Everyone is anxious to arrive and settle in a city and Jerusalem so that will be rewarding after a busy and challenging two weeks. We stayed in Beer Sheva earlier this week which wasn't the nicest of cities but it was fun because we had a night out bowling and getting ice cream etc. I want ... read more

The next stop was Dana Village, a very pretty little stone village. We planned to stop there to visit the Nature Reserve but were told of a campsite 5 miles away which sounded nice so booked in there. At first sight it looked lovely - little cabins set on the edge of a cliff overlooking a ravine - quite beautiful. However, the reality was not quite so good - the plumbing did not work at all, there were no sheets for the beds (we did manage to get the plastic covers taken off the mattresses!) and no lights. Ian and Chris decamped back to the village as Ian’s foot is very painful and staggering about the campsite would not have done it any good. If only we had too. We had a very uncomfortable cold night ... read more

Jordan, ah the hilly, rough, hot, rocky, desolate country which is kind of stuck amongst Israel, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Iraq. Poor old place has plenty to deal with along its borders. Jordan has many goats, deserts and some ruins. I spent the first night in Aqaba, in the Gulf of Aqaba, but got out of there ASAP as it's all a bit too westernised for my liking. The motorway scenery out of there was all a hilly, rough, hot, rocky not to mention desolate road with plenty of trucks heading to Amman from the port. Every third truck or so would honk their horn and give a wave. Nice guys but the sound of honking does wear off. So I was biking to the desert- Wadi Rum and its Bedouin villages and camps. Wadi ... read more

Well I got up early and hitched a perfectly timed ride to the Dahab bus stop for the daily bus to Nuwebia for the connecting two o'clock ferry, heading across the gulf of Aqaba to Jordan. Everything was running smoothly at my end. But somehow that two o'clock ferry didn’t manage to leave until 9 o'clock which meant I landed in Jordan at midnight and was through their shambolic customs routine by 2 am, but I did stop and have a cup of hibiscus tea with the customs officers. Anyway after a long day I found a cheap, by Jordanian standards ( AU only gets 0.66 of a JD) bed in the port town of Aqaba for a few hour sleep. The Next morning I was heading to Wadi Musa or the town of Moses ... read more

On Thursday we left the hotel at 6am to drive about four hours south to Petra. The most famous of Jordan's tourist sites and voted the new 2nd World Wonder, we arrived on site at about 11am after stopping at a small store on the way in. Bottles of water and just about anything else at Petra is extremely expensive so I highly reccommend to anyone coming to bring their own supply... and lots of it. I think I drank at least 2 litres of water throughout the day and wanted more. After slathering on a lot of sunscreen and donning my St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap, we headed to the gate. The entrance fee for one day is 21 JD and only a bit more for more than one day. Luckily, we were able ... read more

First, let me apologize yet again for the lack of updates. Its nice to know people have been asking around and are worried because they havent heard from me through this. Part of the reason is that the site experienced some technical difficulties and lost a critical data. About the only thing I lost were some photos from Turkey and all of them from Romania. I'll be able to replace those soon though. Now back to the show... So now I feel like im in the Middle East. Royal Jordanian Air was a first-rate airline that truly lives up to its royal name. Somewhere thousands of feet above Syria I was very pleased to find out while reading a Jordanian newspaper that Petra was just listed as one of the new modern wonders of the world. ... read more

So here we are at the famous Petra. It was just amazing to see in full. The city its self goes on and on. It took all day to walk around. The Most famous building, the treasury, is only one small part of the place. There are many place to climb to and amazing buildings to see. Not to mention the funniest camels and donkeys that you can pay to take you up the mountains. I decided to walk, I am in much better shape now and it was quite an enjoyable hike. At The Top the view went on forever. I will add tons of photos soon... read more

Petra. Wow.
