today we are starting to get tired we left at 815 and went to the garden tomb there is conjecture as to whether this is the burial place of Jesus is or the church of the holy seplechre or most likely neither place but I still enjoyed going to this site more than the church because it looks more like I would have imagined from the bible record it is in a garden and it is a tomb which would have had a stone rolled in front so you can easily imagine here the scene when the women came in the morning to prepare the body and found the stone already rolled away. we went out of the garden tomb and across the road to the quarry of solomon this was Amazing huge underground quary under ... read more

Today was a bit lighter but still with some exiting events we walked to the jaffa gate which is now only a 20 min walk we have been on that walk now a number of times and each time we find a shorter way, we actually realized that we have been walking through Gehenna (the valley of Hinnom) but now instead of a rubbish dump it is a garden at the jaffa gate we went up onto the wall of the old city and walked on top of the wall past the new gate to the Damascus gate it was interesting to see the old city from the walls you realize that although the city is divide into 4 the Muslim quarter, the christian quarter, the Armenian quarter and the Jewish quarter, the majority of the ... read more

this morning we went to the mount of olives and stayed to talk about how Jesus came here and wept, how he went from here many times into jerusalem through the beutiful gate or the lion gate which we can see from here the temple would have stood where the dome of the rock is today but twice the height dominating the view we talked about the graves here because the jews believe when the messiah comes those buried here will be the first to be raised because he comes to the mount of olives Zach 14 we talked about how this mountain will be split in 2 and a plain would be formed but mt zion would be raised up so many things happened here we then went down the hill to the garden of ... read more

Wow ! ! ! today sooo busy started by walking to the jaffa gate but ruth had the map upside down and we didnt realise till we had gone 10 minuets and noticed the sun was in the west we debated for a while if the sun rose in the west in Israel then we decided it rose in the east because of certain biblical referances and turned around. we arrived at the gate 15mins late to meet mum and dad who had taken a taxi who knew the sun rose in the east. the walls of jerusalem are not those of Jesus time, they were broken down by the Romans in ad 70, the walls you see today were built by the Turks (Suliman the magnificent) but the jaffa gate is in the same place ... read more

today was the best day so far some of our group Ruth George Jordan and Abraham went up the snake path at 4am and saw the sunset george will have photos the rest of us went up by cable car at 8am Massada is amazing when you come face to face with it you wonder at the tenacity and persistence of the Romans faced with a seemingly impossible task of laying siege to a mountain and you can understand the confidence of the Jews on top of this mountain photos do not do it justice and the tons of dirt shifted by Jewish slave labour for 9 months is amazing then there is the sheer opulence of the buildings including 5 palaces built by Herod just for show (he apparently only used it once ) there ... read more

Our first full day in Jerusalem started with another amazing breakfast spread, this time with 4 kinds of smoked or pickled fish - I always like to ensure great breath for the rest of the day! By 9 we were all on the bus and on our way to the ancient walled city. Surrounded by walls built in 1538 by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the city did not expand beyond the walls until the 1800s. We made our way in through one of several famous gates, Jaffa Gate, and into the labyrinth-like city. We first walked through the Arab marketplace - stall after stall of trinkets, clothing, religious paraphernalia, food, etc. - similar to the suqs in Morocco. It was fairly early I guess so a number of the stalls we still being opened ... read more

I arrived in Jerusalem Sunday, 31 May after flying from Athens to Tel Aviv. Travelling from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is quite convenient - the Nesher shared taxi service takes up to 10 passengers to various destinations en route to Jerusalem. I got off near Damascus Gate باب العامود and took a taxi to my hotel on Mount of Olives جبل الزيتون. Both Monday and Tuesday were spent walking about the area in and around Jerusalem's Old City المدينة القديمة. The historical richness of the city is without measure - it is the Holy City المدينة المقدسة to Christians, Jews and Muslims alike. The Old City is surrounded by medieval walls and is accessible through any one of the multiple gates, one of the most well-known being Damascus Gate so named because travellers to and from ... read more

'Why are you going to Israel? You're an atheist!' Was pretty much the most common question I faced when telling people of this trip, they threw it at me with all the incredulity and sarcasm they could muster. I sort of took their point, I tend to only accept things that scientists can explain with big numbers and complicated explanations that I can't even understand, but then I don't believe you need to believe in order to appreciate someone else's viewpoint. Besides, I don't believe a load of Greeks invaded a city inside a giant wooden horse but I still went to Troy, and I'm fairly certain short assed, hairy feet hobbits didn't carry rings around New Zealand but I still went there to look at their home. And anyway, Israel is a land of history ... read more

We arrived at our hostel at 6am after a pretty gruelling back to back red eye flights and a 10 hour layover in Amsterdam. We got here just in time for the free breakfast. We filled our bellies and hit the sack for a couple hours. Waking up at noon we took off into the city. This is our first trip into the Middle East which has been a dream of ours for some time so needless to say we're pretty excited about the whole deal. The first stop was lunch at a local cafe. This was to be our first hummus in Israel and it did not disappoint. Pita and hummus is absolutely legendary here. The olives need no introduction. Fuelled up once more we walked down Jaffa Street towards the Old City. Jaffa Street ... read more

I had a break from the boat so I packed my bag, which I'm living out of, and headed to Israel. There is a wonderful girl, Britt, that is studying in Tel Aviv and I decided it was time to go visit. I arrived and we spent a day in Tel Aviv before renting a car and traveling around the country. As Britt as my tour guide i knew this was going to be a great trip. We first headed to Jerusalem to see the Old City before heading to the Dead Sea and Jordan. Jerusalem is an interesting place. Within one square kilometer you have the third most holy Muslim site, Al Aqsa, the most holy Jewish site, Western Wall, and the most holy Christian site, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It is a ... read more
