Our flight to Tehran was delayed by nearly 2 hours which meant we didn’t arrive at the hotel until nearly 10pm. It was cold and raining and as we drove it turned to light snow. An hour after we arrived everywhere was blanketed. The last day in Tehran was taken up by Marie doing some work, Emma went shopping at the bazaar. Most people would bring home some handicrafts as a souvenir, or maybe a rug. Oh no not us we have 6 Iranian kebab skewers (which are not small) for the bargain price of about NZ$3. Ironically since work was paying we stayed in what should have been by far the best hotel but was by far the worst; rude service, appalling food and rubbish internet. Completely un-Iranian. You wonder when you’re here in Iran ... read more

It took 3 hrs to get to Kashan. We got a taxi from the bus drop off point to a hotel in the guidebook, it was a nice place in a historical house but they wanted US$35 for a box room that just had 2 beds and a narrow runway between with a shared bathroom or double that for a slightly bigger room with bathroom. The taxi driver had waited and said he knew somewhere close that was cheaper (he spoke basic English) so we headed there. For US$35 we got a room in a historic house with 5 beds to ourselves and our own bathroom next door. This was a bit of hassle as it meant that technically we needed to have arms and legs covered and headscarves on to go from one to the ... read more

Leaving Uzbekistan was straightforward, we had to queue to go through 4 sets of security/immigration checks but that was about as exciting as it got. 3.5hrs later we were in Dubai to the news that Trump is the next US President. We focussed on the important things in life like getting more hand sanitizer, soap and shampoo. We think it was helpful having an Iranian visa (instead of doing a VOA) as we got questioned before they'd let us on either flight about visas. We flew through Iranian immigration with a barely a glance, just a straight stamp in. The bags turned up pretty efficiently given the shabbiness of the airport. We changed a few dollars to get a bit of local currency and then caught a taxi to a hotel we'd emailed and booked the ... read more

Lousy Camp to Maku Hotel. 15 SEPTEMBER, 2016. Stage 99 141.30 Kms SubT. Kms 2789.37 kms . Road Condition: ok very hilly, long climbs. After an average sleep, remarkable when considering how seemingly isolated the camp was on a small country road, how many trucks, cars and motorcycles travelled the road after 7pm, not to mention the dogs barking all night, today was tough. Very long climbs and at times very steep gradients, and a persistent 25km headwind all day. On the flip side, the scenery was marvellous, and we enjoyed a 25 km fast decline, which to some degree eased the pain. At lunch was the turnoff ... read more

TABRIZ to STEPPES CAMP. 14 SEPTEMBER, 2016. Stage 98 Last night i enjoyed the best meal on the tour so far, a true home cooked Iranian delight. Apparently the best cooking in Iran is done in the home, and a few enterprising cooks open home cooking cafes, serving only 1 or 2 tables in their kitchens. Our meal was one of these. Certainly have not seen the opportunity to order, let alone eat, a meal like I enjoyed. First was an Aubergine soup, with yogurt and green herbs (it was a mix of smoky flavours and a light sweetness), then was a meatball, the size of a softball or large grapefruit (a mix of a small amount of chicken mince, lamb mince, chickpea, sultanas, rice and an Iranian bean. The mix was not dense or dry, ... read more

TABRIZ. REST DAY 13 SEPTEMBER, 2016 What a difference a single room makes, no snoring, no lights being turned on in the middle of the night, a dry bathroom !! Small things I know, but after 30+ nights, memorable! Headed off for the bazaar at 9am as it was opening later due to yesterday's religious holiday. A huge expanse, bustling with people. The alleys were named for the products sold, shoes, jewellery, pots, etc. More like a flea market with mostly home products - soap, etc. To my mind not as magical as the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. After a few hours I needed to escape. Later spoke to other riders who visited, spending 5-6 hours there. Lucky for me I went independently!! Phil and I then went in search of the Blue Mosque, which was ... read more

Road was busy with trucks, mainly tip trucks, no idea where they were carting loads. Dinner last night was in a Turkish Restaurant on the outskirts of the CBD. An excellent meal! Zanjan was a large city as I discovered riding out this morning. The city roads were very busy. Large roundabouts added to the complexity! The original camp site was to be adjacent to an old bridge. The bridge and surrounding rocky mountainous scenery made it ... read more

After lunch we changed direction and the wind subsided and we virtually had little or no wind, which made the cycling more enjoyable. Made a deviation on route to view a construction built or commissioned by Genghis Khan in the 13-14th century. Whilst he was a bloodthirsty marauder, he did build some amazing construction, interesting to think that he ... read more

We drove about 130 kms, 80 kms of which was still within Greater Tehran! 15 million people need room.
