Tentative plans are - meeting in the early afternoon in Ipanema - on one of the quieter early days and joining a bloco street party. Days and times and locations will be confirmed when those that are heading to Rio get in touch!
Should be fun.

Reply to this We're in Rio on Saturday 2nd February through to 5th Feb, would love to meet up. Or perhaps we'll wave to you from the Carnival Parade on Sunday night, as we will be in the Carnival with "Escola do Samba" school.
Reply to this hey copper, "escola de samba" is "samba school" in portuguese - the actual name of the school is something different (there are many, salgueiro, viradouro, mangueira, and so on).
just thought you'd like to know 😊
enjoy the parades!
Reply to this woops, I'd better learn a bit of portuguese before I come out.
Thanks for letting me know
I've heard that it's best to go out late, about 1am, to experence Rio's night life, what would you say? Sounds great to me, means I can party all night and go to the beach in the day time to recover. :-)
Reply to this That's right: even though clubs are open hours before midnight, it's usually between 1-2 AM that people start arriving. But if you're going to a bar/pub, a samba school rehearsal, a street parade or pretty much any place that's not a club you'd better check, because rules are a little different.
Don't worry too much about your portuguese: if you can samba a little, you'll do just fine during carnival. But seriously: make sure at least one person in your group speaks portuguese. That'll be a lot safer for you when taking cabs and dealing with unknown people in general - and in emergencies, if necessary.
Party all night and beach during the day, that's the "carioca lifestyle". Too bad some of us are actually working too much to enjoy it 😊
Reply to this I've been going to Samba class for over a year now, all for just stay in Rio, so with a little Rio Caipirinhas for Dutch courage and the party atmosphere we'll be dancing all night.

Tuesday 29th 8pm - The Irish Pub: Rua Jangadeiros, 14, Ipanema - in front of Praça General Osório - the outside section - has good umbrellas if it rains. (close to the corner of Rua Visconde de Pirajá)
4 confirmed so far - there are lots of people passing through - bring friends from hostels if you make any - I'm sure some will head on to Lapa.
I will arrange a second meet up - probably for the 2nd - and a bit earlier so it doesn't conflict with any carnival celebrations.
Reply to this Hi, I will unexpectedly arrive for 2 days in Rio, landing on Friday night (1.2) and leaving Sunday night (3.2). I would love to join you in celebrating the Carnavl and will be happy to hear about any meet ups you are arranging particularly in the Ipanema area which is where I’ll be staying. Thanks, Hami
Reply to this Second TravelBlog Carnival Meetup - Friday 1st 9pm - The Irish Pub: Rua Jangadeiros, 14, Ipanema - in front of Praça General Osório - the outside section - has good umbrellas if it rains lightly - but look indoors if it does rain heavily!
(Note: Bloco meetup on the 2nd - to be chosen - probably meeting at 3pm - in Ipanema - getting a recommendation on which party to join)
Reply to this First TravelBlog Bloco Meetup - Saturday 2nd February 3pm - The Irish Pub - keeping it simple at the same square at the same place 😉
The Bloco is
Banda de Ipanema - 4pm start for them! - but there will be masses and masses of people around just before. So if you want to meet up - be promptly - or just hope that we all bump into each other in the party 😉
