After another amazing night's sleep being rocked by the waves, woke up an turned on the navigation channel on the tv and was overwhelmed by a feeling of deja vus! The route was showing we were well off course and headed towards the Spanish mainland.
Now coincidentally the same thing happened on our last cruise on the actual same day of the cruise, we diverted back towards Madeira for a sick passenger to be airlifted off the ship by the Portuguese navy.
An alert came up on the tv this time to tell us that we would be joined by a Spanish navy helicopter to lift a sick person off the ship.
We went up on the highest deck we could access to see the procedure. The conditions were very poor, it was raining heavily and very windy. The helicopter arrived, accompanied by a spotter plane and slowly the chopper hovered down to the forward deck where a medical team were waiting with the passenger and a relative. It took some time to ensure the aircraft was stable enough to hoist the passenger up in the stretcher, followed by the relative. It was a remarkable effort by a
very brave team and eventually the chopper flew away to Spain for the person to receive treatment on land.
After all the drama we took respite from the weather indoors and when it brightened up had a game of mini golf (won by Alex).
After lunch we enjoyed seeing Liverpool beat Chelsea and then I left Alex to watch the rugby world cup final while I went to relax in the stateroom. Checking out our planner I realised we had a show booked for 18.30 so messaged Alex on the inhouse text service to remind him. Just as wee were halfway ready an announcement was made to say that due to the rough conditions the show was postponed as it was not safe for the dancers. (By now you will realise we weren't enjoying the same amazing weather as last year!) So the show was replaced by a stand up comedy show which was good fun and passed the time before our dinner reservation.
Had a drink with a nice couple from Cumbria, John and Leanne, who had made the effort to dress up for Halloween. Just like last year, the group of gay guys and a
bunch of others stole the show with some elaborate costumes parading thru the ship, our costumes never saw the light of day last year so this year they didn't even make it into the suitcase! Maybe next year...
We made our way to the Teppanyaki restaurant where we were entertained by our chef cooking delicious asian food on the hot plate in front of us, I had the chicken and shrimp combo and Alex had the beef. All served with freshly cooked fried rice, salad and iso soup, washed down with a wasabi cocktail, fantastic quality, totally delicious and excellent value for one of the premium restaurants.
Totally stuffed we decided a walk on the deck in the fresh air would do the trick but was assaulted by gale force winds and rain so I left Alex to it and retired to the warmth of the room.
Alex had an adventurous ten minutes along with another couple trying to rescue a bird apparently stuck in a corner of the deck, they managed to free him and he flew off, hopefully to another part of the ship as we were way too far from land for him to make it.
Tonight's towel animal was an elephant! Went to sleep dreaming of Carribean climes!
