30 days to go .................The weather hasnt improved any but plans are picking up on holidays. It's just a month and the final countdown. The shakedown list printed off this morning and when the weather gets better and Kathrein is sorted we can start to pull things out of the van to check them over and put them back. There are so many things to do and it is getting rather exciting. The vans need washing but until the weather clears it seems pointless even trying. Since writing those few words the time has moved on and it is now 26 days to go. The snow has started to melt leaving behind that grey mucky stuff at the side of the road. In places it is still piled high and some of the bungalows at the ... read more

32 days and counting - Suzy is standing in the snow. The weather has turned nasty. It began to snow last night and we woke up this morning to a heavy covering and a grey leaden sky. The journey to work was fraught to say the least with abandoned cars littering the road making it hazardous for overtaking and difficult for the gritters and the snow ploughs to clear the way. Gwernymynydd Hill was a shambles, drivers out of their cars with shovels trying to dig their way out. Cars left in the middle of the road. In the end I got to work, turned round and came home again. This time last year March was fairly temperate with mild weather and the reservoirs empty.Drought was forecast. What a difference a year makes. The clocks change next ... read more

85 days and counting.......................Suzy is still sitting on the drive perhaps a little forlorn waiting for Spring to come and the camping season to begin. Hints of Spring seem just around the corner. The thick snow that lay at her feet last week has finally disappeared and now we are being warned to watch out for floods as the melt water drips slowly into the soil and heads for the rivers and lakes. The pure pristine whiteness that cloaked the hills around the town have gone. No longer can we see miles upon miles of that pure whiteness that only freshly driven snow has. It has a hint of blue and silver about it that shimmers in the cold thin daylight and it stays that way until it becomes mucky and sullied from the tracks of ... read more

Suzy is parked in the snow on the drive wrapped up against the cold wind and the driving snow. The snow started early this morning with a bit of windy flurry. As the day progressed her silver screen covered in snow insulating her against the cold and her little rubber boots became hidden by the drift that was accumulating up against her. I think she probably wasn't jealous of the fact that I had to go out to work and leave her on the drive. I know where I would prefer to be. The drive to work had been fairly uneventful in the morning however as the day progressed the snow came down and turned everything into a world of white. Gardens and trees that looked brown yesterday now have a nice white coat. The few ... read more

The Christmas holiday ended with a bit of a whimper. The weather typically unseasonal. That is if you want snow for the festive season. Every day was dull with the inevitable rain. Drizzle some days, stair rods the next. We have seen no sign of snow nor ice for a few weeks now and the temperatures as January 2013 begins are in heady double figures.10 degrees at 8 in the morning. Yes we have had black clouds threatening poor weather but up to now it has not arrived and the sun seems to shine weakly but nevertheless welcome. The weather forecasters led us to believe that 2012 had been the wettest year on record since 2000. And it certainly felt that way as each month seemed as rainy as the one previous. . However, reality actually ... read more

Autumn has definately kicked in. The mornings are getting much darker and gloomier and will continue to do so especially when the clocks go back in less than a months time. It is becoming dusky in the evening around 6.30. All colour has gone over in the gardens apart from the remaining hardy roses, dahlias and chrysanthemums. The leaves of the trees are taking on the Autumn colours of bronze, gold, yellow and crimson. And those that have already changed are being blown off like confetti in the wind. The Indian summer we had hoped for is a bit intermittent. When the sun shines it is here but most of the time it is cooler and raining. Shops are beginning to fill up with all things Christmas and the gardens are looking very sad for themselves. ... read more

The final countdown – I find myself singing this as the days count down to our first European trip in Suzy. The time has flown. It hardly seems almost two months since we got here and our holiday seemed a long way off. It now feels just round the corner Saturday – 6 days to go and the weather has been awful with incessant rain and it feels much colder than April should normally feel. Apparently April has been the wettest on record for some years and I don’t doubt that at all. The garden looks forlorn and we have been trying to find a window of opportunity to get some netting up to stop the birds decimating our raspberries and other soft fruit. Last year was a poor year for soft fruit but it looks ... read more

It's been easy settling into semi-retirement. Instead of dreading work on Sunday nights it's a lovely feeling to realise that there are still more days without work. Things have been moving on apace with Suzy as we have gradually filled the fridge up with food to take with us on our trip, items have been moved from cupboard to cupboard as we try to find the optimum use of space and everything bar the kitchen sink has been taken into the van. We have produced a shake down list with all the items we need to take with us and we keep coming back to it as we realise we have forgotten to list something. The list seems to grow by the day as we think of something new. . A new atlas of Europe has ... read more

I haven't written a blog for a week or so and there seems as if there has been nothing to write about. We have lost a whole selection of photographs taken in the beautiful cities of York and Durham, some from our visit to Portsmouth and a few from the pretty Rhug Chapel, near Corwen and Portmeirion - home of the The Prisoner. I can recommend both York and Durham, both being pretty cities. York with its Shambles and wonderful Gothic cathedral and Durham with its cathedral. There is so much to do in both locations and with the need to retake photographs we will have to visit again. Portsmouth even on a grey windy day was an interesting place to visit for a weekend. The roman remains of Portchester Castle, the Spinaker Tower and the naval ... read more

Sometimes it is easy to overlook the area around which you live. Take it for granted even. We travel all round the world and yet what is just round the corner from us is strange and sometimes unknown. The Clwydian Hills which surround the vale of Clwyd being a case in point. Less high than Snowdon, less rugged but yet just as majestic in their own way. We walk locally sometimes just round the block- a flat 3/4 hour walk with views to die for of the hills brooding in the weak winter sun. Lanes full of brambles, holly, ivy and beneath them the green and black spotted leaves of the Cuckoo Pint just springing to life. Lambs frisking in the fields, snuggling up to their mothers. The waggling of their tails echoed in the shaking ... read more
