20 June 2017 In 2014 the North Coast 500 was created to encourage tourists to use the scenic routes, as shown in blue on my map, around the perimeters of northern Scotland. Over the next week or so we plan to follow it from John O’Groats along the north and then down the west to Loch Carron.
Today we started by a brief call at Thurso and then a short detour to the hill of Cnoc Freiceadain which had interesting cairns on its summit and extensive views over the nuclear experimental plant at Dounreay. We then travelled through miles of featureless peat bog called the Flow Country, crossed the sea loch of Kyle of Tongue and finally arrived at the entrance to Loch Eriboll where we parked the van for the night at a spectacular location on the causeway connecting the tiny island of Ard Neakie to the shore.
