When we are travelling in the van we normally top up the gas bottle every three weeks. Unfortunately there was no facility to do this in either Shetland or Orkney but our supply did not run out. We did a 20 mile detour southwards to a garage in the village of Watten outside Wick which had an Autogas pump. We can now venture into the wilds of Northern Scotland feeling far more confident.

It was then back north to John o’ Groats which is not much more than the famous sign and a row of tourist outlets. We were fortunate to meet Paul Thomas who was just starting his cycle ride to Land’s End. We gave him a lucky Scottish five pound note to carry on his journey.

The north east point of mainland Britain is in fact Duncansby Head. We drove up there and then walked south along the east coast past the impressive Stacks of Duncansby and once again saw many nesting sea birds, some at really close quarters.

We had another night’s stop at Dunnet Bay.
