06 May 2017 The Orcadian weather was atrocious; cold, wet and windy all day.
In the afternoon we ventured out of the house, donned all our waterproof gear and visited the Kirkwall tourist office who were very helpful in providing the information we needed for our visit to Orkney.
Afterwards, we sheltered in the outstanding building in the town, St Magnus Cathedral, a beautiful sandstone church built from 1137 by Earl Rognvald nephew of the martyred Magnus Erlendsson. Surprisingly, the cathedral is owned by the people of Orkney and looked after by Orkney Islands council. It has a Church of Scotland congregation, but is used by other denominations.
