We woke to heavy drizzle but undaunted we put on our waterproofs and had a morning walk around the Kettla Ness peninsula of West Burra island. The weather gradually improved giving us plenty of bird watching opportunities.

After lunch we returned to Shetland mainland and headed south to St Ninian’s Isle named after the 12th century church, the ruins of which are still visible. The Isle is interesting because it is connected to the mainland by a unique sand causeway known as a tombolo.

The carpark had stunning views over the tombolo and Isle and we spent the night there which gave us the opportunity to see the sun sink beneath the sea whilst watching the birds fishing and a seal occasionally popping his above the water.
