We spent an hour in the Brae Hotel having a coffee and updating the blog and then drove south to the small fishing port of Scalloway in Central Mainland of Shetland. There we enjoyed a lunch of local fishcakes followed by a walk around the town including a visit to the local museum which among other things told the moving story of the Shetland Bus. After Germany invaded neutral Norway in April 1940 many small fishing boats escaped to Shetland, the nearest landfall. Throughout the rest of the war these craft and later 3 American fast submarine chasers were used to transport agents, radio operators and arms to Norway to help the resistance. The boats always had Norwegian crews. This operation was known as the Shetland Bus.

Our journey continued over two bridges to the island of West Burra where we spent the night by yet another marina at the settlement of Bridge End.
