Today our goal was to get as much sightseeing done because there was the threat of rain in the afternoon. We walked through the Grassmarket area, up Victoria Street, and to the Royal Mile, where we had breakfast at the Deacon’s House Cafe. Chrissy and I had eaten here before and loved the food so Nanci and I decided to have breakfast there. I had the Deacon House platter with haggis sausage and Nanci had smoked salmon cream cheese bagel. We shared the haggis sausage, which was so good.
We had tickets to enter the castle at noon. We had also ask for the Taxi to take us to the top of the castle so Nanci didn’t have to walk. It was pretty awesome, driving to the top as we went through a tunnel that is used to get the royalty and the military to the top of the castle. It was a tunnel, carved through the lava rock. It’s a part of the Edinburgh Castle that most people don’t get to see.
Ever since we landed, I’ve been having trouble with my ears, and my equilibrium. When we got to the top, I felt queasy, but I thought
I could work it out and be OK. Nanci and I took several pictures saw walked around. She was just awestruck by the view both in and out of the castle. It is amazing as you can see all over Edinburgh!
Afterwards we went in to Saint Margaret’s chapel, which is the oldest standing building in all of Edinburgh. It was built in the 1100s and survived the many wars that had taken place there. Today there was going to be a wedding held in the chapel at 1:30 PM. It is such a beautiful small chapel.
I stood in line and took pictures, But the minute I went outside I knew I was sick. I knew I was going to throw up and I was trying to find a place away from the crowd, but it was too late. I’m sure not many people can say they threw up in the lava rocks outside the Saint Margaret’s chapel at the Edinburgh Castle, but I can.
Nanci saw that I was in trouble and came to take care of me. She went to a gift shop and asked where the nearest restroom was so that I
could throw up again and then we decided to take our taxi back down the hill and head back to our hotel.
Once I threw up, I felt much better, so we took our time walked in and out of all the gift shops, and took a lot of pictures.
We decided to go in to St Giles Cathedral there on the Royal Mile. It started out as a Catholic Church, but during the Scottish Reformation, led by John Knox, it became Presbyterian. It is a beautiful church founded in the 12th century. It has stood through several attacks during several wars. Once we got outside it started to rain, so we headed for the hotel.
Originally the forecast for Edinburgh was all rain everyday. We managed to get lucky And get to spend some time sightseeing before the rain actually began each day. However, the forecast for the remainder of our time in Edinburgh supposed to be terrible. It was 100% chance of rain and warnings about flooding. My inclination was to find a train out of there that night but I thought we’d be OK if we went the next day.
I checked with
the hotel, canceled our reservation for Saturday night. Then I contacted the Balmoral house in London to see if they had an available room so we could at least leave one day early and not be in pouring down rain. Once I had the hotel rooms, all straightened out, I changed our train reservation to an early train on Saturday morning instead of Sunday. So we got things ready. Went to bed early in preparation for leaving the next morning.
When you travel, you have to be prepared to change your mind, sometimes at the last minute. We shall see what tomorrow brings.
