Just about to go to the local brewery for evening meal and drinks. Almost enough to engender a belief in something or someone divine when the closest decent place to eat is a brewery! The pubs here are best described as 'atmospheric' or 'with character' otherwise they would be credited as pretty downmarket, dingy or disgusting! They look like they missed out on being condemned by some council oversight! Sure they have cheap beer but... One of the major pubs in town did not allow women in until the late 70’s and there are a few around here I wouldn't take a woman into! We may have seen them initially at their worst as they were full of Celtic fans after they had seen their team thrashed again (and as usual) by their arch rivals. They appear to hold about 30 people tops yet manage to have 50 or so spilling out onto the path and surrounds. Anyway the brewery is good and serves many German inspired dishes that match their German style beers. In short no grumbles here.
I'm kcab from the brewery. Sampled their tasting platter of beers. Great idea and sufficient sized taste (third of a pint)
to make some informed decisions. Four smaples means just over a pint which is a pretty good start.
As for today. The morning was spent at the Kelvingrove Museum and Gallery. Apparently it's the most visited gallery in the UK, the fact that it's free surely helps. But it's also good. It has Rembrandts, Picasso's, Monets and, well all the big names along with heaps of Scottish artists (surprise, surprise) and the museum section has an eclectic array of stuff ranging from English armour to an Egyptian sarcophagus or Torres Straight Island turtle poles. We took a tour here and it was good because it flittered here and there and did not try and show us everything. It had the compulsory Charles Renee Mackintosh section (that's good as his work is interesting) but it had heaps of other stuff that was well worth the time and effort. I went to the Glasgow Uni all prepared for the 2:00 tour not realising they don't run on Mondays! So just fill in the gaps and use your imagination. Its the fourth oldest Uni in the UK, after yo know what and you know what and Edinburgh so it would have been
fascinating. The buildings are very Hogwarts and the alumni are quite infamout which makes for a good combination.
The other photos are of the oldest building in Glasgow. Surprisingly it's a church. I say surprisingly in half jest because John Knox the Reformationis managed to destroy nearly every single Catholic Cathedral in the land. His religious zealotry seemed to be boundless. Sure a couple of the early Reformationists were burned alive (at St Andrews really near the golf course! That would be enough to put you off your game.) but he was still right over the top. Yet he is revered here! I reckon there's more than a touch of Alloatollah in him and that may be tough on Alloatollahs. This Cathedral soars into the heavens (I know they are meant to) and is impressive. It would be more so if the sandstone wasn't so blackened by soot and smoke though. It's cavernous interior is decorated with stained glass and it's grand but the big feature is the wooden ceiling. It's that no nail construction we've seen before but it still impresses. The necropo is just as impressive, lots of people die over 500 years or so. But the
dominating monolithpic column of John Knox overshadows everything else. And because I don't like him I wasn't ready to spend too much time there.
We also had lunch at Antonnio Carluccios' restaurant in the centre of town. A little more expensive than usual but as we only have a single course and not even a main meal it wasn't too bad cost wise. Lee had what see described as a delicious mushroom soup (I thought it a little thin but the m not a mushroom fan) and I had a prawn marinara dish that was delicious and not thin! Nice oasis in the middle of the city and although it's not as hectic as Edinburgh it was nice and calm and relaxing.
All in all, all good.
Few drinks with Robert the host, cup of tea for Lee and bedtime.
