On June 21st, me and my Brother-in-law, Geoff, set out on the mammoth journey from John O'Groats (at the North-Eastern-most tip of mainland Scotland) to Land's End (the South-Western-most point of mainland England), travelling only under our own steam - hopefully fuelled by some of the British Isles' best ale. Cycling, on average, 75 miles a day we'll hopefully make the entire 860 mile journey in only 12 days, travelling through the Highlands of Scotland, the slums of the North-West and the cider-making regions of the West country. My charity of choice is the NSPCC, who do great work protecting those who can't protect themselves. Geoff will be collecting for the British Heart Foundation, another extremely worthy cause, who pioneer research, prevention activity and giving care and support to those living with heart disease. http://www.justgiving.com/Geoff-Maguire... read more

Tuesday 14th July Journey to the end of the road............John ‘O Groats We hadn’t realised that the A99 road on mainland Britain doesn’t actually finish at the most northerly point. That honour falls to a lesser road a little further west of the small famed village of John “ Groats .That road being the B855 ending at Dunnet Head. But it doesn’t sound right to say that we have been from Lands End to Dunnet Head as we are sure no one outside the village of Dunnet, about 4 miles from the headland actually knows where that place is.So we will opt for John ‘O Groats as our destination as we want to also set foot at Lands End ,at the bottom of the Britain,in about 10 days time when we return to England. The weather has deserted ... read more

Today I woke up earlier than normal to go on a day trip to see some Scottish wildlife and the highlands all the way up to john o'groats! I got the idea from someone who was going on the trip in my hostel. We met at nine fifteen and headed out. There was ten of us on the tour plus the guide. We were in a mini coach so we got to get right up to nature. We went on a few mini hikes, saw deer, seabirds, seals and the super funny highland cattle with their bangs all windblown in front of their face. We also saw so many lambs!!! They are the cutest ever! Not to mention the views and all the scenery! LFG and Fort Edmonton: I saw the Orkney islands from across the ... read more

What a good weekend I’ve just had up there in Orkney, I’ve got friends up there that I dive with, one’s a guy that first took me to Orkney in 1999 to dive on the wrecks of the German high seas fleet that was scuttled on 21st June 1919, and he’s now got a B&B up there and would welcome bikers. I went up for 2 reasons, a) I’ve always wanted to take the bike up there, b) I’ve got a dive trip planned for August and the dive operator, which is a partnership has split up, so I needed to sort it all out and make sure all would be okay when we get up there in August. I planned to come back Sunday morning but Orcadian hospitality got the better of me. I wanted ... read more
