I spent two awesome days in Belfast, and I will definitely come back in the future. Something about the city is enchanting and it really was a great place to visit. I stayed at Arnie's Backpackers, which was a really cool little hostel. The lonely planet describes it as cramped, but I think it's totally charming. The owner, Arnie, is quite a character, and really makes you feel at home (at his home). I arrived in Belfast after a short flight from Glasgow. I settled in at the hostel, and then after a bit of food set off for a walk through the Catholic neighborhood surrounding Falls Rd. Much of the "Troubles" in Belfast centered around the neighborhoods bordering Falls and Shankill Roads (Protestant). The two areas are divided by the Peace Line, which is a ... read more

Sept 3. We went to Limerick, well took a taxi out of Limerick to its suburb Castletroy. ok place a little dirty, it is the crime capital of Ireland. The taxi driver thought I was pretty funny when I asked him if we could tour a castle we went by which he informed me was really the town jail and an asylum. The house and yards in Castletroy were huge and very rich looking. The place we stayed was also very nice, we each had our own room with our own bathrooms, it was actually a little apartment or flat. Sept. 4 We took a bus back to Dublin. It was pooring rain but we decided to walk to the harbor anyhow and got soaked. Definitely wasn't worth it. ... read more

I would like to dedicate this journal to a great conservationist and professional enthusiast; STEVE IRWIN. I absolutely love his programs on discovery channel, and although some things he has done might have been controversial, he definitely has done a great deal for the conservation of not only australian wildlife, but also worldwide. Just watching his shows always gave me a boost, his energy and enthusiasm comes flying of the screen. When i was in his zoo in beerwah, queensland, i remember asking one of his staff if he was like that in real life too, and she gave me a definite YES. It is absolutely sad, and i hope his legacy will continue thru the development of his zoo, and thru television, so that many young generations to come get to see what this planet ... read more

While packing for the next leg of our trip, we put on some music using the trusty iPod and let loose with some singing. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door, which Jenn answered. A guy about our age stood there and said, “Oh, hi, I just HAD to come over and see who was holding that note!” Jenn laughed and closed the door. Very random. Apparently, our karaoke practices had been paying off. We bid farewell to the hostel with another tasty meal at the Causeway Café and lugged our bags up Great Victoria Street to the bus station. A little note here - the men in Belfast seem to enjoy hitting on women from their cars. Elderly women, women with strollers, women with tons of luggage, doesn’t matter to them - you need ... read more

Just to update you guys on our plans, we are adding another location to our trip, "The Gambia"! Ulrika’s parents are kindly whisking us off to west Africa the day after we come back from Thailand to help celebrate Ulrika’s mums 50th birthday. Hopefully it should be a nice place to unwind but I’m not looking forward to the many hours of flying to get there! On a different note, our packing is coming along nicely but we still have to find Ulrika a nice pair of walking shoes. It’s proving really difficult since she has very small cute little feet! Size 2 (or 34 in euro sizes) to be precise! In the mean time we are mad busy preparing to move from our apartment this weekend. We have lived here for a year now, so ... read more

Our time in Dublin was over, and since we didn’t want to drag our bags on public transportation, we again opted for a taxi to take us to the bus station. I had read some horror stories about long distance buses, but was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to figure everything out. Another example of when my anal retentiveness saves the day: I had done my research and knew exactly what bus to catch and when to catch it for each leg of the trip. This saved us a bunch of time, cause we timed our arrivals at the bus stations perfectly. After stowing our luggage beneath the bus, we boarded our bus to Belfast, which got really crowded at the Dublin Airport stop. The ride was supposed to take 2.5 hours, but ended ... read more

Hi, everybody, how's life? As you can see, I have been traveling through northern ireland by now, and although the weather was crap/irish, we got to see a fair bit of what the north has to offer. Starting from belfast international airport, where I picked up my dad and also a very nice little rent-a-dent, we travelled thru poring rain to the city of Derry. Ofcourse that was shit, considering we couldn't really get out of our car unless we wanted to get absolutely soaked. And so, we drove onwards along the north coast. The rain stopped just now and then, long enough to jump out the car and have a wee puff, but even then, the scenery was already getting very good. Huge cliffs and a very rough sea provided us with some needed photo ... read more
