London Bridge
Little insignificant me on London Bridge Monday 4th May 2009
Woke up and felt the clothes I had handwashed and they were all dry!! Interesting to note that it must have been fairly hot in that room to dry overnight with no airconditioner going!
Went and had some breakfast. Getting quite sick of rice bubbles and ripoff weetbix. Hung out at the chill room again. Chris from WA came in and we decided to do a walking tour to the TATE museum.
Left at about 10am. Kinda went the wrong way but went over London Bridge and saw a lot of the sites.
You'll see in my pictures a big giant egg shaped building. I'm still not exactly sure what it is. Hopefully I'll find out soon!!
The buildings in London are fantastic! So old and beautiful, its just so hard to describe if you haven't seen them before.
There are a lot of chain stores including subway, maccas, kfc, burger king which we now refer to as 'generic devil' chain stores. Its pretty funny, but you probably needed to be there to understand completely!!
We found a building that looked like a wine vat! It looked so silly that
The View
London Bridge I just had to take a photo to show all of you!!
I think that most of it is just stairs outside for emergency exists but still!!
Ended up doing a full loop and back to where we nearly started from at Southwark Cathedral which is just a two minute walk from the hostel. Took us a couple of hours!!
Finally made it to the TATE Modern museum and went to see all the free entries. A lot of people where there because of bank holiday but you could still do everything at your own pace. I'm not really an art-y person at all and I didn't understand a lot of it but I was really happy to have the 'Waterlillies' by Monet and a few pieces by Piccaso.
Most of the exhibts were really out there. I guess I should have guessed before we went in because it is called the 'Tate
Modern Musuem' and the exhibitions were 'Material Gestures', 'Poetry and Dream', 'Energy and Process' and 'States of Flux'.
Finally made it back to the hostel! Four and half hours of walking around wasn't bad exercise for the day - plus the stairs.
Ended up chatting to everyone back at the hostel and decided to go the the Evensong at Westminster Abbey at 5pm. FREE ENTRY!! If you thought the outside of the Abbey was beautiful then you will be absolute astounded by the inside.
The inside took my breath away! All the history, awnings and the people buried there was just so overwhelming. I don't think that I could every describe properly. You'll just have to go and see it for yourself.
Ended up walking back to the hostel and it was a little wet. It really was a fantastic day.
Finished up talking to everyone back at the hostel, but got so tired went to my room at 11pm to be organised for the next day. Early day tomorrow - need to go to BUNAC to find a job and accomodation.
Tuesday 5th May 2009
Up reasonably early to try and find a job!! Left the hostel at 10.00am and caught the tube to Farrington Station and from there its about a 5 minute walk (uphill). Arrived and introduced myself to the staff and was explained a little about what they did. Unfortunately the Orientation
wasn't until tomorrow. There was supposed to be one on Monday but with the Bank Holiday, I will have to wait until tomorrow. Oh well, that gives me something to do tomorrow.
Located the job boards and starting applying around for jobs. Sent my CV (in UK its CV not resume) to about 10 different places. Within 10 minutes of applying for a job I had a response. They had tried to contact me but my mobile wouldn't work!! Oops I forgot to tell them to put the +61 in front of the number. I rang them back and organised an interview for 8.30am tomorrow morning. Not bad considering I had just applied!! Feeling very happy with myself I continued on my way to finding jobs.
I was talking to another Australian guy and he just happened to say "Oh you must be Bec". I was taken aback thinking "how the h*ll does this guy know me" but as it turns out, Vanessa (from the Walking tour on the 2nd May) came to stay at the St. Christopher's Inn in Hammersmith and said that she had met me on the walking tour and to look out for me.
Random stuff. Turns out his name is Alan and he's from the NSW/Victorian border and works as a dairy farmer.
I had to organise some more accomodation because the hostel I am staying at in Southwark is booked out for the weekend. Alan suggested the Hammersmith one where he is staying. He said its a bit better quality than the Southwark/London Bridge one and its just been done up.
So went on line and booked a weeks accomodation (5 nights at £7, 2 nights at £20 plus a booking fee). Not too bad considering I was charged £20 per night even during the week at the Southwark/London Bridge hostel.
Decided to go back to the hostel and get organised for my long day tomorrow. Interview at 8.30am, Orientation at 10.30am and moving all my stuff from London Bridge station to Hammersmith!!
Chatted to everyone and had some tea from Stainsbury's. I feel like I practically live there. Im really looking forward to having a kitchen eventually.
Unfortunately Chris from WA left for Portugal today so that was a shame. But it was just nice to have some company for a while.
Went back to
Parish Church of St. Michael Cornhill
A beautiful Chuch from the Ward of Cornwall my room and packed and laid out my clothes for tomorrow's interview. First impressions mean everything! Laid in bed, looking through the photo album I have, reading my travel book 'Europe: On A Shoestring' and listening to girly music on my ipod!
I feel alseep pretty quickly and didn't even hear anyone else come in! I feel as though I can sleep anywhere and through anything at the moment!
