At St. Christopher's, breakfast is included in the nightly rate, so weetbix it is for me!! Plus really terrible juice!!
Across the road is Stainsburys. A local supermarket with some really cheap food!! Thankfully bottled water is really cheap if you buy the 2 L bottles!! Everything is so expensive here, at least I really don't feel like eating much at all. VEGEMITE!! Little jars are still pretty expensive but I need my vegemite for vitamin B!! Right
mum?!
Because I was up so early, I organised to go on a free walking tour.
There were three other people from St. Christopher's going on the walking tour. Josh from New Zealand, Vanessa from Quebec and Fabio from Venezula. We were all travelling alone so it made it a little easier. It was a bit hard to understand Vanessa and Fabio so I had to talk slowly.
The tour started at Hyde Park. Then walked to Buckingham Palace.
Heather unfortuntely Queen Elizabeth wasn't home so I couldn't have scones and tea with her. It was the changing of the guards as well and they were all playing musical scores from movies. The
theme from Indiana Jones and a couple of others I can't remember! Whoops! Lots of people and police around.
Continued on to Prince Charles' house and the guards that are standing in front of it to guard it (well duh)! They are all supposed to keep a straight face but one of them cracked a big smile 😊.
There are some beautiful wild tulips growing - I don't think I was allowed to take any so I just left them there.
Walked around for ages and went to the place where Henry VIII lived. It's so fascinating!! So much history surrounds England, it just so overwhelming.
I think you'll see a picture of Josh's head in the picture (whoops!!).
Walked past one of the museums (can't remember the name). Free entry but I had to sort out accomodation so maybe another day!
There was still a memorial for the ANZACs with wreaths (and a random little girl).
Big Ben was amazing - couldn't believe the size of it!
There was a random statue of Abraham Lincoln. Not sure why it is there because he is American but decided to take a picture
anyway!
Westminter Abbey was fantastic! It is so beautiful and facsinating!! Hopefully will be able to go in for an evensong which is free entry.
Parliament House is where the tour ended! Apparently there was a foiled plot back in the day, but its not very well known about. Some one tried to blow it up with a lot of gun powder but someone found out about it. Everyone involved in the plot ran away and the gun powder got wet so they decided to try and 'dry it out' in front of the fire! IDIOTS!! Apparently it blew up the place they were staying and some of them died there. The ones that didn't die were taken back and hung, drawn and quartered.
Also some random things I saw was;
- Nelson's Column
- Trafalgar & Leicester Square
- Wellington Arch
- Churchhill's War Cabinet Bunker
(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyde_Park,_London for more information)
Finally got back to the hostel and had to organise the rest of my accomodation. I ended up having to move all my stuff from the 3rd floor back up the street to another hostel and back up 2 flights
of stairs!!
My muscles are starting to get quite big now! Lol!
The new room I was in had 4 girls from Canada travelling together, another Candian who just happened to know some of the 4 Canadians travelling together.
I fell asleep at 6.30pm! Whoops!! Oh well you get that.
We had two spare beds and I thought well that would be nice to not have a full room but two males checked in at about 10pm and midnight. Its a 24-hour check in at St. Christopher's.
One of the guys starting snoring and I thought, this is just what I need, NOT!!
Sunday 3rd May 2009
Pretty lazy day today. Woke up and had breakfast and spent a lot of the day talking to people in the chill out room of St. Christopher's.
Decided to do some 'hand washing' in the sink!! What an interesting experience with no plug. I couldn't attach my pegless clothes line anywhere so I had to tie it around the bunk beds.
Went back downstairs and was supposed to be doing a pub crawl but kinda got stuck talking for the most of the afternoon
then realised it was 8.00pm and the pub crawl started at 6.30pm!! WHOOPS!!
A group of girls and I decided to enter into the Quiz! Does anybody know the names of all seven dwarfs??? All measurements had to be in feet not metres and none of us knew that at all.
We ended up coming in 4th, not last, which was a major achievement and managed to score some free chocolate schnapps shots!!
Bed at about 10pm. All clothes were still pretty wet on the clothes line, hopefully they dry quickly!!
