Our send off from Kirkby Stephen Mark current owner of C2C Packhorse. Janet left by taxi for train to Manchester and flight home on 31st.
30 August 2019, Friday. Day 14 of trip day 10 of Coast to Coast.

Kirkby Stephen to Keld. Leaving County of Cumbria entering County of Yorkshire and the Dells.

The 4-mile + climb out of Kirkby Stephen to the 9 standard Riggs on the mountain top was a struggle. This set the theme for today's walk.

We had a very delightful breakfast at the Jolly Farmer. Mark met us and we had a photo send off. In Kirkby Stephen the bags have to be ready to go at 8 am.

As soon as we left town we were greeted by an extremely strong Southwest wind. Do not know officially but it was well over 60 miles per hour. It was so strong that it made it very difficult to stand much less walk in it. It would blow us off course frequently.

Combination of wind and rain meant we had very few stops for taking photos on this leg. After leaving the 9 standards the trail was dodging all of the numerous bogs across the mountaintop till we could get to the road going into the valley of the river Swale. This valley commonly enough

Nine Standard Riggs in the distance
is called the Swale Vale.

We found a semi culvert hut used as a sheep shelter to sit out of the wind and rain to have our sandwich for lunch. This was it about 1:30 in the afternoon.

We passed the very lovely Ravenseat farm where we had tea and scones served by two delightful young girls. Turns out their mother is Amanda Owens a very famous author of living on Yorkshire sheep farms. Tea and scones were delicious and we needed the break to sit down out of the weather plus they also had a flush toilet. The winds and rains were still strong and we continued to walk along the muddy paths although there were paved in many places by large stones which really helped. We arrived at Keld Lodge about 4:15 in the afternoon. The hot shower was very welcome and the delicious beef dinner was also good. Here we met a father and son from London who were walking the Coast to Coast trail. The father had joined his son for only 2 days. We had seen them first at the 9 standards Riggs as they went flying by us into the wind.

Tough to communicate in the wind. Or see with rain on the glasses.

Statistics for the day: about 12.5 miles, 1700 feet elevation gain. 7 hours walking. Driving wind and rain.

For those of you following this blog you will see writing a day behind may result in photos attached to wrong day. The day and time on photo tells on me. So many of today's photos I attached yesterday, mistakingly. Last night we were all tired.
