Day 13: 12th October 2009 11:50 PM The final day started in exactly the same way as the first, with a burst of music from my alarm clock at 4.00AM, although this time it was the sound of Mansun‘s ‘Take it Easy Chicken‘ rather than the tuneless noise of my clock radio on Day 1. Oddly enough, two weeks of fresh air and refreshing walks has given me a sufficient burst of energy to wake up at this time and be able to get straight out of bed feeling relatively invigorated. John and Lyndsey must feel the same, Lyndsey having already risen half an hour before me (convinced, without a watch or the alarm on her phone, that we had overslept) and John, the man who could sleep competitively, getting up at the same time as ... read more

9:45 PM At 4.00AM this morning I awoke to the sound of some tuneless noise thumping a repetitive beat somewhere nearby. I opened my right eye and turned towards my clock radio, confirming that it was, most definitely, 4.00 in the morning and that my clock radio was working, even if it wasn’t producing the kind of music normal human beings listen to. The left eye, at first, failed to open, joining the rest of my body in wondering why the hell I had set my alarm to get me up at this stupid hour, a time surely reserved only for vampires, werewolves and milkmen. Eventually my mind brought the rest of the body up to speed; I had a plane to catch. Not wanting to get up particularly early in the morning on the first ... read more

On July 27th 2008 I became a tough guy. A few miles outside Wolverhampton I took part in a bi-annual event called Tough Guy - Nettle Warrior. Me and my friend Jim Reilly went down on the Saturday night before hand. We stayed at the parents house of one of the Global Exchange Volunteers(Syrian Group) that were in Glasgow earlier in the year. They stayed only 1mile from the event , so it was very convient and saved us a few boab. The tough guy event started at 11am on the Sunday morning. The event started with a 4mile run. Then the fun started. The next stage was called the salom. It was running up and down the hillside a total of 10 times. It sounds easy but near the end it was very slidy and ... read more

Hi, Tiscali have closed down my account so don't have access to it anymore. Didn't bother to warn me. Sick April Fools Joke maybe. Had just been sent details from the company taking me round South America, would have appreciated the chance to read and print them before being cut-off. Please can you send me all e-mail addresses (don't have written down anywhere) to lizzie_day@o2.co.uk. Could do with postal addresses aswell. (that includes anyone I ought to know - brain been filling with other things - had been using e-mail account as address book as well as everything else) Also anything e-mails sent in the last few days. Thanks Will add more details to holiday shortly.... read more

So after months of planning, saving and working hard, what initially seemed a distant dream is now upon us! Between us we have sorted mail, served drinks, sold gas, cleaned roofs and answered phones, all with one aim, to reach today with enough money in our backpocket to make a go of travelling the world! With that aim completed, the next aim must surely be to survive the first few days! Months ago I had dreams of the day we leave, being in a state of euphoria, feeling invincible. However in reality, today I think is going to be a lot less glamorous. It still seems like there is so much to do; from sorting out phone contracts, to sending off final items sold on eBay. It still feels a bit surreal that 7th February is ... read more

How time flies eh? In just one month from tomorrow we will be setting off, and as a result it is finally starting to feel as if it is really happening. It is no longer in the distant future, but actually right on our doorstep, which is exciting, if a little daunting. Tonights post is another technical experiment. I am posting using the wireless bluetooth keyboard I purchased for my phone. It's an amazing bit of kit, and with my phone folded into its widescreen position, allows me to have all the convenience of a laptop in something the size of my palm. I have uploaded some pics of the keyboard, and so far would definately recommend it to fellow travellers. Obviously at the moment, the closest it has got to field testing is writing this ... read more

Hello! And welcome to my upstairs bathroom! What!? I hear you cry; why another entry so close to the last, and why the upstairs bathroom? I can answer both questions with one word... Technology. For today i got my phone back from nokia, all shiny and refurbished, and as such, it is time to test its remote blogging capabilities. The reason i purchased a good phone is for the very reason that on occasion computers wont be available and hence i will need to keep people updated from the palm of my hand! So see this as a trial, a teaser, even a tester! ... read more

I think more than ever, I feel the trip is getting close. Which probably isn't all that surprising fact as due to the natural workings of the spacetime continuum, the trip is as close as it ever has been. Have had some further injections, and have got a cold. Maybe it is a mild strain of typhoid? Or maybe it is Man-flu, we may never know. Anyway, have been researching Anti-Malarials and it looks like Doxycycline is getting the nod. Admittedly Malerone is milder and has less side effects, but it costs 10x as much, so Ill put up with the photo-sensitivity and dizzy spells that one must become accustomed with on Doxy. Apart from that, there is nothing really to update - these pre-trip posts really are just me practicing writing a journal/blog. I suppose ... read more
