As promised, I had a very busy Saturday. I took the metro into Newcastle, about a 25-minute ride, with my friends Aijai and Alena. Newcastle is great -- it almost reminds of New York City in an obtuse sort of way, at least in terms of breadth of culture (there were museums, independent stores, designers, art galleries, music venues, and more pubs than Southington has buildings). We traveled around the city on foot gaping at the odd juxtaposition of centuries-old architecture and modern culture. What made the whole trip worth it, besides the fantastic views of the sunset from the bridge, was the Baltic Contemporary Art Museum. Situated right along the Tyne River, the museum, housed in an old, five-story Flour Mill, showed several extremely modern art exhibits, though I would be at a loss to ... read more

We travelled along the western bypass and arrived at the airport at 16:00 after a lovely coffee we decided that it was time for us to part. After a couple of hugs and kisses parted company with Stephen and Bill walking in one direction and me in the other, at the time we were all very emotional. Clearing customs and finding the departure lounge was a doddle however I thought of singing ’Were Coming Home Newcastle’ as I walked towards boarding gate 3, this was surreal. The flight down to London was not very long basically take off a cup of tea sandwiches and hey presto you are circling around the lights of London waiting for a landing slot at Heathrow. When leaving Newcastle I had a lovely view of the Cheviots in the distance, harvested ... read more

Our friend Julia was celebrating her 30th birthday and invited us to come along to her party hosted at a local Persian restaurant. We had a reserved room for about 25 guests. With the customary low table, all the guests were invited to take their shoes off, pick a favorite cushion, and gather around the table while sitting on the floor. The food was excellent and the experience was a blast! ... read more

So I've been really slack with updating my travels just because not a lot has been happening lately. Be warned, it's pretty boring haha. I haven't finished writing about London yet, so I'll start this entry with that. Buckingham Palace So first of all this is London Day 4 and not day 3 (even though it jumps from 2 to 4) simply because it was the 4th day I was staying in London. I spent the day with Hannah checking out the remainder of touristy sights around London. I started off by going into Buckingham Palace while Hannah watched the changing of the guards (I had seen enough of it at Windsor Castle). The inside of Buckingham was real impressive. Everything room is just massive and the amount of gold, silver, marble and varnished wood is ... read more

So - as iv sold my cars, have no ties, and winter is setting in - now is the time to go on a crazed world tour! All of my preparation is now complete. I am spending most of my time eating, sleeping and training. I am sure this will be the trip of a lifetime and will provide me with a weath of experience. All set!! After what I thought was a very successful practice pack (ie i could fit everything in, the zip closed AND i could lift it off the floor)... my re-pack last night didn't quite go to plan! I decided maybe i didn't need to take the spare toilet roll and maybe I didn't need ALL those tops.. or jeans.... but the running stuff is staying in there! there was no way i could leave without it - worst case scenario is that I become a beach bum and decide to just ditch it! Eek, less than 24 hours to go! And i'm still getting used to this travelblog website so the formatting may be a bit odd ! but hopefully by the end of the trip, i'll have it down to a treat! :o)... read more

It started raining yesterday while we were on the train from Edinburgh to Newcastle, and it hasn’t stopped. Despite the rain, Liz and Eric, friends of my father, picked us up at the hostel this morning and we set out to see some castles. Bamburgh and Alnwick were on our schedule, but unfortunately the roads to Alnwick were closed and so we only managed to see Bamburgh today. The drive to the castle was beautiful, lots of green pastures with picturesque stone walls, it looked just like a postcard. With origins in the 6th century, it began as a small settlement probably made mostly of wood, but soon after was expanded by the Normans, and began to resemble the castle that we see today. Upon the invention of the canon, it was increasingly harder to hold ... read more
