Visit to Ickworth House, Park and Garden Ickworth Estate is one of the nearest National Trust properties for John & Mary, and they visit there regularly. They took us to Ickworth on 19 June. As following the descendent path, I showed my parents the size of Ickworth Estate, pointing at the woodland shown beyond. They were amazed with the sizeable parkland. John explained to me that there used to be the village of Ickworth on the Ickworth Park, but the villagers were sent to Horringer. John & Mary told us that St Mary Church, was built for the Hervey family, has now been refurbished and opened to the public. As well as original documents and fragments of valuable porcelain, there were several artworks and ornaments restored such as murals or sculpture of golden dove. The descending ... read more

John & Mary kindly treated the lunch to use, as well as paying for the entrance fees to Anglo-Saxon Village. They suggested we would go to Fuller Mill Garden, which was accessible by the footpath from the country park. They also paid for the entrance fees to the garden. Fuller Mill Garden is set in a natural landscape including the River Lark and the Mill Pond. There were huge variety of perennials, shrubs, aquatic plant, tender plant, rock plant, conifers and trees thriving on the borders surrounded by the River Lark. My mother enjoyed looking at them and took loads of photos. Many colourful flowers did not only decorate the lush parkland but also offered therapeutic environment. It was one of the best gardens we had visited for a long time. I have heard that it ... read more

John & Mary took us to the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village near Bury St Edmunds on 18 June. We had come to West Stow Country Park but have not yet visited the Anglo-Saxon Village. We were offered to see the film of the Anglo-Saxon Village at first and were shown collections of pottery, cutlery, armoury items, coins, surgical items and accessories excavated on and around the site of West Stow, and they were classified by the different period, e.g. Ice Age, Stone Age, Bronze Age and Roman Period. I was given the map of Anglo-Saxon Village that include the pig’s farmyard, Sunken house, Oldest house, Weaving house, (Community) Hall, Living House, Workshop and Farmer’s House. Those thatched houses were reconstructed on the basis of archaeological findings and have been built recently. Some of those houses, e.g. ... read more

When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money!! HELLO! This quote is very apt. If I could give one piece of travel advice, it would be to PACK LIGHT! Nothing can prepare you for the intense European early-summer heat (the kind of heat that you get in England at the peak of summer), the miles and miles of walking because your boyfriend tells you "it's not that far", and the constant dull ache in your shoulders that almost comes along with that nagging voice in your head with your Mother's words saying "I told you so". Lesson 1: Backpack's are heavy. Planning a trip around Europe is not as easy as it seems. We did pretty menial planning in terms of making ... read more

Peter and I flew from Bhubaneshwar to Mumbai on Sunday morning and were met by Parakram, the middle son. So lovely to see him again and, like his brothers, looked after me so very well. We stayed at his company's flat in an suburb called Khar West in Mumbai and were looked after there by two lovely chaps who cooked and cleaned and made great tea for us! We hit the floor running and immediately travelled down to the area of Colaba, the main touristy and sightseeing district on the waterfront where the Gateway to India and the Taj Palace Hotel are to be found. Two incredibly beautiful Victorian buildings. We hopped on the ferry to go over to Elephanta Island, and hours trip each way, a World Heritage site famous for its sacred caves and ... read more
