So here we are back home, we've been in Oxford now for nearly 3 months. We both have got back into 'normal' life again, it was hard getting out of the backpacking mindset, you know, not caring about money, getting up late, having a real laugh etc etc, but now here we are, reality has smacked us right in the chops and we have to face it or be swallowed up by it. Well like we always do, we face things head on and 3 months later we have both got our selves full time jobs, Christina in a sport store and me in an office, both of us working towards starting some qualifications at the end of the year, me as a fitness instructor and Christina as an interior designer. We've decided not to go ... read more

Geo: 51.7523, -1.25582After a slight detour through the gardens at New Place, which happily took us through a parking lot where I could squeal over a Smart car, we walked to Holy Trinity Church to see Shakespeare's grave. The verger who was taking donations at the entrance was an adorable older man, who wanted to know where we were from, etc. He glanced this way and that, then told us that if we wanted to take a picture, we could ("Shh"). Beautiful little church -- with Bill and his family earning permanent front-row seats. As we left, Mr. Verger-man asked Sara if we'd gotten our photographs. "Yes, thank you so much." With a sly downward look, he proclaimed us "Naughty Americans." That just tickled us, and we used the phrase quite a few t... read more

The Weston Manor Hotel, showpiece of the lovely village of Weston-on-the-Green and where I worked as a dining-room waiter during 1974. The medieval Baron's Hall (present dining-room) was the bailiffs court for the Abbott of Osney who owned the house before the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII in the 16th century. Subsequently the great land owning families, the Earls of Abingdon and Berkshire - the "Norreys and Berties" resided at Weston Manor until the death of the last heir during the great war in 1917. The building was converted into a hotel in the late 1940's, and bought by its present owners, the Osborn family in 1983. The hotel owners at the time I was there were Mr. Archie Price and Mr. Nicholas Price (1963-1983). At the Weston Manor my boss was Mr. ... read more

Our trip down Memory Lane starts at "The Lawns" B&B in Woodstock, which served as our home base. A great little town with good restaurants and Pubs. I lived in Oxfordshire at the nearby RAF Base Upper Heyford (1972-1974) with the US Air Force. Also worked as a dining room waiter at the Weston Manor Hotel (1974) in the village of Weston-on-the-Green near Bicester. ... read more

Today is the 26th July 2003, and we are back in Oxford!:o( Haven't posted for a while as we changed our plans at the last minute and have been too occupied with sorting out the next stage of our travels. So ... we decided to leave Denmark a week earlier than planned because the strawberries had started to get a bit thin on the ground and there were over 50 people on the farm meaning that the extra work was a bit thin too because so many people wanted to do it. We run out of money quicker than we thought, and didn’t earn as much as we thought we would either, but never mind! We got back to the UK on 5th July and had plans to go to Tours in the North of France, ... read more

I have now gone through almost a rite of passage here, in one day I went to a cream tea (yum! The vanilla tea and scones complemented each other quite well.) then later on hit a pub called the Lamb and Flag. I liked the L&F a lot, students conversing, and laid back environment. Managed to get myself in a conversation comparing the British Empire to American Imperialism. Oxfordshire ( the Oxford area) has some gorgeous rivers (I’d call them streams, they call them rivers) and canals, so I did a bunch of the walk/hikes around the meadows and streams, which I enjoyed a great deal. I went out to Blenheim Palace for a day. What a huge place! All the Rosenblatt’s (my mom’s large extended family for those who don’t know) could take up residence ... read more

Oxford is a cute college town, with plenty of colleges to go around. More than colleges is the number of pubs, most of which are quite old, like from the 16 and 1700's. Lots of stone walls. this is a real walking town once you get a map. I've checked out the Botanical Gardens, Carafax Tower, Christ Church College (lots of harry potter fans there, as some parts of the movies were filmed there) the canal walk and 2 markets. My tevas are getting real milage. Yesterday i snuck into Rhodes House Library for a while and parused my way throught the Pacific Section for 3 hours while it rained. That library is so well taken care of! I may try to get back in tomorow to finish reading about the pacific anti-nuclear treaty and the ... read more

We've decided to go travelling after many many months of indecisions ... bugger it, only once in a life time opportunity etc etc ... and we really need to have some time away from things, see if what we really want in life is real, dn't know how long we'll be, not making any definite plans! Today is 9th May 2003 and we received all our travel gear this morning, woooooo it' so kool! Got our backpaks, sleeping bags, tent, waterproofs, travel eating utensils, some walking shoes, travel first aid kit, travel water filter, loads of stuff. Only got to get a couple of small things like a solar powered battery recharger/power unit, which obviously uses solar power to charge our rechargable batteries, but it also doubles up as a power point for any electrical stuff ... read more

Well I survived my first Henley Regatta. Having never been near a rowing competition getting the chance to dress up in proper Henley attire, jump on a riverboat with 60 other antipodeans was an opportunity too good to refuse. The crew (who are a fantastic bunch of people) set out from Hammersmith to Henley from Paddington station (yep the one with the little brown bear). It was first beers early as we loaded onto the boat from the shoreline and spent the day cruising up and down the Thames adjacent to the rowing. The weather was great, at time sweltering, but mostly fine and the company was just awesome. Afterwards we headed to the Angel, that famous Henley pub on the river to continue festivities!... read more
