David here...
So, after a bit of time saving, lots of discussion on how to spend it and whether we could really justify going on another round the world trip, we decided that the last trip gave us so much pleasure and happy memories that we just had to do it again.
So, over the months since we made the decision to do it we've been shopping for clothes, useful items, trying and buying new backpacks and planning where we are going to go on this trip. I say we've been...the planning part of the trip has mainly been done by Suzanne. She has been busy checking routes, monitoring prices, booking flights, and deciding on places we just have to visit. We've tried to pick a route that is not a copy of our last trip and will be visiting 14 new countries, only briefly going back to 3 that we've visited before. The route we wanted to go stumped STA Travel so we are doing this one completely by ourselves, booking all flights in advance so that we get to do exactly what we want to. The countries we will be going to, I've probably not got these
in the right order, are:
Germany (Köln) - Thailand - Myanmar (Burma) - Indonesia - Malaysia - Philippines - Taiwan - South Korea - USA (L.A.) - Brazil - Paraguay - Uruguay - Argentina - Bolivia - Chile - Peru - Ecuador - Colombia - USA (North East area)
I've been lucky enough to get a career break again so that gives us a level of security for when we arrive back in the U.K. in September 2017. We have managed to get a tenant for our house as we will be renting it out to provide us with some extra beer money. With a week to go before we set off we are feeling fairly relaxed about getting everything done in time. Last weekend saw us packing away all non-essential items and beginning to pack for the trip. As you can see from the photos, we are a little anxious about getting everything packed away, however this is how it was last time. I'm sure we'll manage to pack everything we need without issue. The next week will be all about ironing, sorting our packs out, cleaning the house ready for the tenant and saying our goodbyes to work, family and friends. Last time, we left a few things to the last moment and we were quite literally cleaning as we walked out the door. This time we are a little more organised (hopefully) so we should have everything done the day before we go (Wednesday 5th October) so it should be a little more relaxed as we lock up the house for the last time in a year.
It feels good that our first stop is Köln, a city that we know and love so much. We know what to expect and can look forward to it with mainly excitement and not having to be anxious about the unknown.
So, just over a week to go, everything seems to be in hand and we're looking forward to seeing what this next year has in store for us.
