Our journey from Edinburgh started at the train station, where we picked up our rental car. After fitting all of us and our luggage into the car, we had our first experience with standard transmission, right hand side driving. Unlike our experience in Australia, even with narrow streets and round abouts, our voyage to England was mostly uneventful. In fact no other motorists gestured, honked or stared with derision at us. We arrived Alnwick Castle - site of the first broomstick scene in Harry Potter. Although we arrived too late to enter the castle, the grounds and the castle exterior were 'Brilliant!'. There was a Falconry exhibit and archery and broomstick flying training (although we arrived too late in the day to experience them). So far, this was our favourite castle.... read more

Sunday, August 4th—Drove from Scarborough to Dunstan Hill (Alnwick) dropped of the caravan, had lunch then went directly to Hogwarts AKA Alnwick Castle. While we were at the castle we went on a Dragons Quest, watched Raphael’s Falconry—an old form of falcon training and the kids enjoyed rolling down a large hill. For the Harry Potter fans reading, we had dinner at the Hog’s Head then back at the campsite, took an evening stroll down to the sandy beach with tons of jelly fish to play with, explored until after sunset, got home right before dark (9ish), showers, a game of war then off to bed! Monday, August 5th—Rainy day at Alnwick Castle, not pouring but enough to soak through rain jackets after about an hour long tour entitled “Battle Ax to Broomsticks” which took us ... read more

Hello fellow blog-meisters. Just over an hour north of London by plane is the sparsly populated border county of Northumberland and the pretty town of Alnwick (pronounced, "Annick"). This is where Dave grew up! Quaint fishing villages cling to the edge of the rugged coast, small farms and market towns are dotted throughout the hilly interior, and fancy-schmansy X-ray machines have private rooms in the hospitals. Theresa's foot needs some TLC but will recover in time for the next adventure (yup, already planning the next one...). We spent Christmas and New Year with family. It was also the wettest December (and year) since sometime in the 1800s and neither of us have any reason to disagree with those rainfall records! Many raindrops fell upon us and a lot of towns were flooded, rail-lines were washed out ... read more

I went on another trip today. As you might be able to guess from the title it was to England and consisted mainly of castles. Our first stop was actually an unofficial stop that was not supposed to be on the tour. We went over to Holy Island. Holy Island is a tidal island. The road over there is only uncovered when the tide is out. We got there just after the shuttle went up to the castle so I ended up walking up there. I didn't go into the castle since it cost money (and there were still 2 castles to come). I did however walk up and look out from above. I got back down to where the bus would take me back at 10:49. The bus was supposed to leave at 10:50, it ... read more
