All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague away kit. After the blog title, the initiated would have expected these as the next words. However, we are not in Prague. We are in Grantham. I find myself photographing a man dressed as a biscuit giving me the thumbs up. He would be disappointed by later in the afternoon. The day had started in the town centre outside Margaret Thatcher’s birthplace. We moved on from Grantham’s famous daughters to the famous sons. The Kings Grammar School is just round the corner. It was here that Sir Isaac Newton was educated. The modern school on Manthorpe Road hides the older side of the school. A blue plaque adorns the side of the original school building on Church Street, where it is widely recognised that the young Isaac ... read more

On the corner of North Parade stands a fairly non-descript shop. It is a weekend. The shop is closed. The blinds are down. The business trades as a chiropractor and health shop in the modern era and it is only the small plaque above the front door that advises of it’s place in UK history. “Margaret Thatcher. Britain’s First Woman Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was born here”. It is interesting to note that it is only a small slate plaque that has been erected. The Grantham Civic Society has the usual circular blue plaques on other buildings of interest elsewhere in the town, but not this one. The other motorists and pedestrians continue past without so much as a casual glance. In the day when Margaret Hilda Roberts resided here, the building ... read more

After two weeks of Eastern being back at school, it was finally time to have my first day of classes abroad! It started off an early morning as all the roommates and I woke up at 7:30 in order to make it to breakfast before it closed the doors. All 150 plus students at Harlaxton had the first British Studies lecture at 8:30. We sat in the gorgeous Long Gallery and tried to keep up with the British Lecturer Mr. Baker. As time went by students continued to type quickly on their laptops trying to keep up with the lecture and not staring off at the beautiful room around us. It helped knowing all of our teachers sit in the back of the room to make sure we did not creep on facebook. After my first ... read more

This morning Megan, Danika, and I decided to wake up early to get to breakfast by 8 in order to hop on the first bus into town at 8:30. We were going to Grantham, England for the morning to explore deeper into the cultural difference in England. As we left the beautiful manor, we were still taken off guard by driving on the wrong side of the road. Once we started to approach the town more traffic became heavier, roads became narrow and much more complicated. A simple round about did not exist in Grantham. People were crossing the streets early to get into town to begin the shopping at Poundland, Morrisons, the local street markets, and the many different shops. Today was shopping day for the town of Grantham. As we first walk into the ... read more

After 5 hours to the airport, 3 waiting to board the 8.5 hour flight, an hour waiting to board the bus for another 2 hour drive to the manor; all I could think about is when can I sleep. This moment was completely taken away from me when we turned the first bend to see Harlaxton Manor on the hill in the distance. It looked as if I had just stepped onto a movie! I turned from be exhausted into ready to explore this amazing place I get to call home with chills running all over my body. After the mile drive up the rock path driveway, I reached my new home. Here I was greeted by numerous faculty and staff welcoming me to my new life. We were all lead up a marble staircase with ... read more
