I arrived a few days ago to meet up with Frances in Hinckley where we are staying with her sister, Pat. Between all the family lunches and dinners we managed to sneak away for an afternoon and visit Bosworth; the battlefield where in 1485 Richard III lost his life and crown to Henry VII. The remains of Richard III were found in August 2012 in an archaeological dig of the Greyfriars monastery under a town parking lot in Leicester, ironically marked with an "R" for reserved parking. DNA samples matching known living descendants of Richard III's sister gave the collaborative evidence to verify the identity of the skeletal remains. A facial reconstruction of Richard III has been developed from the skull by the University of Dundee and was on exhibit at the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre ... read more

21 September Spent the morning at Waldorf-Astoria for a coffee and tea. Difficult to get in as Pres Obama is staying there and heaps of security personnel around. Had to go through airpoty style security to get in. Walked up to Central Park and strolled along 57th Avenue. Had lunch at a little deli. Back to the hotel for a rest, and dinner on the cheap. Went out to a bar on 9th Avenue and chatted to some locals during happy hour. $3- bottles of beer, pretty good. 22 September Last day in the big apple. Went to Times Square and had lunch at the Red Lobster. I had a lobster tail, scallops, and prawns. Just had soup in a sourdough bowl followed by prawns. Delicious. Schuttle to the airpoty about 3 for 6.30pm flight with ... read more

"Great breasts." You know you've hit a low point in life when such comments are aimed at you, rather than your wife who's walking beside you. I was in England for the first time in 2½ years and this insult, from a group of uniform wearing students, was my welcoming message. It hit home hard. I'd been living in Asia, gorging on everything edible, and was in the worst physical shape of my life; bouncy man boobs and a derriere that would continue to wobble long after other body parts had stopped. Having never seen much of England before, I'd promised my American wife a spot of sightseeing around my native country. Travelling around England has never appealed to me. Surely a case of 'not on your own doorstep,' I've always chosen far flung locations believing ... read more

We're off again and beginning our trip with a quick visit to family. Luckily our flight to the U.K. was not delayed by volcanic ash - in fact it took off and arrived 15 minutes early. We also arrived with a spell of decent weather which should last until we move on (provided that our next flight is also on time).... read more

Hi Everyone! With less than a week to go until we embark on our trip things are getting a little frantic! Myself and Jud only got our Indian Visa's last week with a lot of faffing about in the visa application centre in Birmingham. At the moment it's just a case of getting together all of our kit and buying last minute essentials. Just to let everyone know we will be having a bit of a farewell thing this Thursday in Hinckley; so feel free to come and say good bye (and buy us a few drinks!). I will write again before we leave on sunday, Jack x... read more

This year I'm off to Europe for several weeks. I'll be travelling with Matt (who I went around Africa with last year) and a friend of his, Lucy. We'll be driving around in my car ('99 Vauxhall Astra). Our route will take us through France, Germany, Poland, Luithuania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy and back round to France. We're taking a tent, stove, etc with the aim of camping most of the way around and using hostels here and there. While we've got things planned for some of the countries (which can be seen url=,14.941406&spn=21.98284,36.826172&z=5here), other countries we've left to be more flexible to allow us to catch up or slow the pace down as necessary. You can leave comments on any of the posts. I'm hoping to make ... read more
